LOUISVILLE, KY- “I recruited well for the event”, says Taylor Riggs of partner Cooper Musselman. They both share laugh of relief as they pose for a picture with the Fred Allen Trophy. The duo won with a score of 12-under-par 132, after playing in a sudden-death playoff against Michael Crabtree and Chandler Morgan. “I guess we played pretty well together. I would birdie hole, then he would birdie hole, like it was kind of back and forth”, Musselman explained how he and Cooper were able to pull ahead of Crabtree and Morgan, who had a slight lead at the end of yesterday’s round.
In the Players Flight, Scott Bolin and Justin Boyd came out ahead with a total score of 139. In the net scoring, competitors David DeWilde and Michael Smith placed first, with a score of 131.
Stefan Robins and Kenneth Kirchner won the Senior Flight overall. “This guy shot 69, what can I say!”, Robins says of his partner when asked about his own game. Kirchner, however, wouldn’t take all the credit. “We played very well off of each other, yesterday and today. If he was out of a hole, I played well. If I was out of a hole, he played well and it was the ultimate matchup of partners playing together” Kirchner says of the team’s victory. In the net scoring, John Lepping and Edwin Lowry won with a score of 129.
Cousins, Fred and George Gupton, came away with the victory in the Masters Flight, scoring 145 points. The two joked together and took “silly pictures” in front of the scoreboard while waiting for the final results, and were just as light-hearted upon hearing they had won. In the net scoring, Danny Ashlock and Joe Hovekamp came out ahead, scoring a total of 125.
The Kentucky Four-Ball Championship Trophy was named after Fred Allen, long-time Kentucky Golf Association volunteer. Fred Allen was very instrumental in promoting amateur and senior amateur tournaments throughout the state. As a sign for respect for his service, a championship trophy was named in his honor in 2013.
