If this Kentucky PGA Professional’s golf ball could talk, we would want to find out more about the person who makes this game more enjoyable for us! Luckily, Kentucky’s Family of Golf Organizations is so strong; they generate a force to glean information from the golf balls of KPGA Professionals from across the Commonwealth. The information from these golf balls is as different as the markings the Professional made on them!
PGA Professionals are experts in the game and business of golf. This month, we picked out an experienced ball from the shag bag of Andrew Lardner of Polo Fields Golf & Country Club to find out a little about where his expertise comes from and a few more fun facts we couldn’t resist asking … after all, a golf ball never lies!
Q: What was the moment where Andrew Lardner became “hooked” on golf?
A: When Andrew was 14 he bought a used club at a yard sale for $5.00. He went that day to a nearby driving range with a neighbor. He had a natural, good swing for never hitting balls before. He started to hit balls every day and then played his first round of golf a week later at Bobby Nichols Golf Course. He played nine holes and shot 52, but made a birdie on hole #8. That was when I knew he was hooked!
Q: Does he have any golf superstitions?
A: He always marks me with a blue line and an N for Noah, L for Lillian and a J for Jordan. Noah and Lillian are his children’s names and Jordan is his wife.
Q: What’s his favorite club in the bag and why?
A: His favorite club in his bag would have to be his 58-degree wedge. He can hit high shots, low shots and control me with the club. Whenever Andrew gets in trouble, his wedge and I do our best to keep his score low.
Q: What does Andrew do to prepare for an important round of golf?
A: He will try to hit balls on the range a few days prior to the event and work on his short game. The day of the tournament he will get to the course an hour early and he will start at the range to loosen up, then move to short-game and then putting.
Q: Who is his dream 4-some?
A: I would say his dream foursome would be: Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, Jason Day and himself.
Q: Andrew is at the Halfway House during a round and there is a group on the 10th tee – what does he order?
A: He would order a club sandwich and a bag of chips. He would also get a large sweet tea.
Q: What is the best shot he ever hit?
A: I would have to say his best shot was on the last hole at Shelbyville Country Club. It was a par 3 and he was taking the PGA Playing Ability Test and needed to par the last hole to pass. He hit a 6-iron on the middle of the green and made the putt for birdie. That was the start of his PGA journey.
Q: What is his favorite part of his job?
A: He enjoys playing and teaching the game.
Q: What are Andrew’s interests off of the golf course?
A: He enjoys watching UK Sports and spending time with his wife and children.
Q: What are three more “fun facts” we need to know about Andrew Lardner of Polo Fields Golf & Country Club?
A: He enjoys classic rock, loves to play competitive golf and his favorite food is anything spicy.
