If this Kentucky PGA Professional’s golf ball could talk, we would want to find out more about the person who makes this game more enjoyable for us! Luckily, Kentucky’s Family of Golf Organizations is so strong; they generate a force to glean information from the golf balls of KPGA Professionals from across the Commonwealth. The information from these golf balls is as different as the markings the Professional made on them!
PGA Professionals are experts in the game and business of golf. This month, we picked out an experienced ball from the shag bag of Mel McIntyre of Kentucky Dam Village State Park to find out a little about where his expertise comes from and a few more fun facts we couldn’t resist asking … after all, a golf ball never lies!
Q: What was the moment where Mel McIntyre became “hooked” on golf?
A: Mel started playing at age 13 when the town he grew up in Clinton, Iowa opened a public golf course. He was pretty much hooked from the first shot. He started working at the course picking the range and cleaning golf carts and when he wasn’t working he was playing. He probably averaged 36 holes a day from age 13 until he left for college.
Q: Does he have any golf superstitions?
A:In a tournament, if he makes a bogey, he always change golf balls. After all, if he made a bogey it must be the ball’s fault.
Q: What’s his favorite club in the bag and why?
A: Driver. Always been the best club in his bag.
Q: What does Mel do to prepare for an important round of golf?
A: He tries to put in some work on his game every day. Some days he only has maybe a half hour, but he is pretty good about putting in the work required in order to give himself the chance to play well.
Q: Who is his dream 4-some?
A: His dad, son and Arnold Palmer.
Q: Mel is at the Halfway House during a round and there is a group on the 10th tee – what does he order?
A: Gatorade and a peanut M&M
Q: What is the best shot he ever hit?
A: He holed a 5-wood for double eagle in an Iowa PGA event in the early 90’s.
Q: What is Mel’s favorite part of his job?
A: He loves running tournaments!
Q: What are his interests off of the golf course?
A: College sports: favorite teams University of Iowa and UofL. He also enjoys Chicago Cubs baseball. He loves to read and is always reading something! His favorite authors are Richard North Patterson, John Grisham and Robert Whitlow.
Q: What are three more “fun facts” we need to know about Mel McIntyre of Kentucky Dam Village State Park?
A: Mel loves ice cream and his favorite is pralines and cream at Baskin Robbins. He loves Andrew Lloyd Webber music: Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Les Miz. He also loves to travel – one of his bucket list items is to visit all 50 states, he is only 7 or 8 states shy of his goal!
Safe to say that Mel is one well-rounded PGA Professional!
