If this Kentucky PGA Professional’s golf ball could talk, we would want to find out more about the person who makes this game more enjoyable for us! Luckily, Kentucky’s Family of Golf Organizations is so strong; they generate a force to glean information from the golf balls of KPGA Professionals from across the Commonwealth. The information from these golf balls is as different as the markings the Professional made on them!
PGA Professionals are experts in the game and business of golf. This month, we picked out an experienced ball from the shag bag of Brad Hicks of Keene Trace Golf Club to find out a little about where his expertise comes from and a few more fun facts we couldn’t resist asking … after all, a golf ball never lies!
Q: What was the moment where Brad Hicks of Keene Trace Golf Club became “hooked” on golf?
A: When he was 8 years old, he received his first set of clubs and joined the Junior Golf Program at Murray Country Club. From that time on he was always working on either his golf or baseball game.
Q: Does he have any golf superstitions?
A: He always marks his golf ball with a quarter, heads up and George Washington always looking at the hole.
Q: What’s his favorite club in the bag and why?
A: His favorite club is his 58 degree wedge. When he’s not playing a lot and missing greens, he needs to know he can get up and down the majority of the time. He’s used a 58 degree wedge most of his career and it gives him the versatility to play a lot of different shots.
Q: What does Brad Hicks do to prepare for an important round of golf?
A: Before an important round he always try to get a workout in at the gym. This helps loosen his body up and gets some of the nerves out of his system. He’ll then make sure to get a good meal, either breakfast or lunch. He tries to get warmed up no more than an hour before the tee time. If he gets there too early, he ends up burning too much energy and can come out flat.
Q: Who is Brad’s dream 4-some?
A: His dream 4-some includes: Sean Connery (in Scotland would be ideal), Jim Nantz (the stories he could tell about golf, college basketball and the NFL would be awesome) & Tiger Woods (greatest of Brad’s generation).
Q: Brad is at the Halfway House during a round and there is a group on the 10th tee – what do they order?
A: He orders a hot dog. He is such a picky eater, that’s usually what sounds good at the turn.
Q: What is the best shot he ever hit?
A: It occurred when he worked on Sanibel Island at The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club. In a practice round before the Sanibel Two-Man, he hit a hole-in-one on the par 4, 8th hole. It was a 290 yard island type hole with water surrounding the entire hole. Brad saw it disappear, but because the hole was cut on the back of the green, he thought it went off the back. Sure enough when his group got up there and couldn’t find it behind the green, they checked the hole and there it was. To this day, it is the only recorded hole-in-one on that hole.
Q: What is Brad Hick’s favorite part of his job?
A: Being a private club professional means no two days are the same. He loves that! His job is to help his members and guests enjoy their time at the club. Whether that is talking to them about golf or anything else in their lives, giving a lesson, or playing golf with them, he is there to serve them. He also really enjoys the merchandising aspect of the job. Keeping up with the latest trends both in fashion and equipment is important for the success of Keene Trace Golf Club.
Q: What are his interests off of the golf course?
A: Away from the club, you’ll find him spending time with his family and friends. He loves to travel and visit both new and favorite places. Kiawah Island, Chicago and South Florida all hold special places in his heart. If he’s not traveling, you’ll find him watching his Kentucky Wildcats, Indianapolis Colts and New York Yankees. All his life he’s been a huge movie fan, so on cold winter days in the off-season, he’s always watching movies.
Q: What are three more “fun facts” we need to know about Brad Hicks of Keene Trace Golf Club?
A: Brad’s favorite Movie is Moneyball. His favorite song is “Livin on a Prayer'” by Bon Jovi. His favorite food is movie theater butter popcorn.
