If this Kentucky PGA Professional’s golf ball could talk, we would want to find out more about the person who makes this game more enjoyable for us! Luckily, Kentucky’s Family of Golf Organizations is so strong; they generate a force to glean information from the golf balls of KPGA Professionals from across the Commonwealth. The information from these golf balls is as different as the markings the Professional made on them!
PGA Professionals are experts in the game and business of golf. This month, we picked out an experienced ball from the shag bag of Gary Manes of Elizabethtown Country Club to find out a little about where his expertise comes from and a few more fun facts we couldn’t resist asking … after all, a golf ball never lies!
Q: What was the moment where Gary Manes of Elizabethtown Country Club became “hooked” on golf?
A: He has been around golf his entire life. His fathers’ uncle was a golf professional at a small country club in the Indiana town where he was born. His father also worked for his uncle, so he went to the golf course almost every day with his dad beginning when he was able to walk.
Q: Does he have any golf superstitions?
A: Only that he likes to play with golf balls numbered 3. He figures that a lot of 3’s on a card isn’t bad!!
Q: What’s his favorite club in the bag and why?
A: He usually prefers to have a long iron in his hand because it is much harder to shank.
Q: What does Gary do to prepare for an important round of golf?
A: He will hit about 4 wedges, 4 eight irons, 4 four irons and 4 drivers to see what direction it is going that day and about 8 putts on the practice green to check green speed.
Q: Who is Gary’s dream 4-some?
A: He has had the opportunity to play with many professionals and celebrities in his 30+ years as a Professional. But I think he would most like to play with some of the Professionals from the early days of the PGA. Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Bobby Jones would probably head the list of to round out the dream 4-some.
Q: Gary is at the Halfway House during a round and there is a group on the 10th tee – what does he order?
A: A hot dog and a coke and then a bag of peanut m&m’s to cap it off.
Q: What is the best shot he ever hit?
A: He once made a hole-in-one on the 328 yard, par four, 8th hole at Sunblest Golf & Tennis club. It was a very dry year before they installed the fairway irrigation.
Q: What is Gary’s favorite part of his job?
A: He does love the people involved with golf. He has never met a stranger and can talk to anyone about anything.
Q: What are his interests off of the golf course?
A: He loves deep sea fishing. If he weren’t a PGA Professional, he would be working on a boat as a charter captain or maybe even a first mate.
Q: What are three more “fun facts” we need to know about Gary Manes of Elizabethtown Country Club?
A: He is a “Parrot Head” complete with a parrot headcover on his three wood. Actually, the headcover is so old that it used fit on his driver but now has been demoted to the 3 wood because it will not fit on the larger drivers of this era. He is ambidextrous at golf. He plays golf right handed, but is also able to play left handed. He is also an excellent chef. When he is in the kitchen at the club cooking his “world famous lasagna” or any one of his other specialties, the dinner crowds are always the largest. That doesn’t please the regular chef very much, but Gary loves being in the kitchen.
A special thanks to Gary Manes and his golf ball for spending time, allowing us to get to know him better! Look for tips from him in your next two editions of Kentucky Golf Insider! We look forward to searching a new KPGA Professional’s shag bag next month to find out more about the experts in the game and business of golf!
