If this Kentucky PGA Professional’s golf ball could talk, we would want to find out more about the person who makes this game more enjoyable for us! Luckily, Kentucky’s Family of Golf Organizations is so strong; they generate a force to glean information from the golf balls of KPGA Professionals from across the Commonwealth. The information from these golf balls is as different as the markings the Professional made on them!
PGA Professionals are experts in the game and business of golf. This month, we picked out an experienced ball from the shag bag of Nick Sweeney of Heritage Hill Golf Club to find out a little about where his expertise comes from and a few more fun facts we couldn’t resist asking … after all, a golf ball never lies!
Q: What was the moment where Nick Sweeney became “hooked” on golf?
A: Nick became hooked on golf when he was 5 years old and became curious about the game that his Dad loved. He convinced his Dad to start taking him to Golf World and he became hooked.
Q: Does he have any golf superstitions?
A: He doesn’t really have any golf superstitions, except he usually plays a Titleist #9 golf ball.
Q: What’s his favorite club in the bag and why?
A: His favorite club is his 8-iron. He feels like he never misses with the 8.
Q: What does Nick do to prepare for an important round of golf?
A: Before an important round, he will listen to music. He makes sure he gets to the course early enough to warm-up and talk with people before the round.
Q: Who is his dream 4-some?
A: His dream 4-some would be Ty Webb, Carl Spackler and Al Czervik.
Q: Nick is at the Halfway House during a round and there is a group on the 10th tee – what does he order?
A: What he orders at the turn depends on how well he played on the front 9. If he is playing well, he will order water and a granola bar. If he didn’t play well on the front 9 then he probably orders a hot dog and a beer.
Q: What is the best shot he ever hit?
A: The best shot he ever hit was in 1990 when he was 6 years old on the 2nd hole at Golf World. A cut-down PowerBilt driver from 90 yards that ended up a couple feet from the hole and setup his first birdie. He still has the scorecard.
Q: What is Nick’s favorite part of his job?
A: His favorite part of the job is just being around the golf course on a daily basis and interacting with customers, members and other employees – whether it is talking golf, sports or life. He has made many great friendships from working at a golf course.
Q: What are his interests off of the golf course?
A: Off the golf course he enjoys hanging out with friends and family, traveling, listening to music and attending UofL sporting events.
Q: What are three more “fun facts” we need to know about Nick Sweeney of Heritage Hill Golf Club?
A: He is named after Jack Nicklaus, he collects vinyl and loves digging through the record store to see what he can find and he is addicted to Mexican food.
