Louisville, KY — On behalf of the USGA, the Kentucky Golf Association conducted the U.S. Amateur Championship Qualifying Sectional, awarding one qualifying spot and two alternates. Golfers were challenged at Greenbrier Golf & Country Club’s 6,516 yard, par 72 Championship course. Jim Volpenhein (age 57), of Union, KY, John Lepping (age 59), of Louisville, KY, and Steve Rogers (age 61), of Bowling Green, KY, were tied at one-over-par 73. Despite Rogers recording four birdies, and Lepping, three birdies, to Volpenhein’s one during the 18-hole round, it was Volpenhein who secured the qualifying spot when he birdied the third playoff hole.
Twenty-six (26) seniors were vying for the one available spot, but it will be Volpenhein who will advance to the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, played at Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minn., August 26-31.
