First Round Results
It wouldn’t be an annual Kaiser Cup without chilly temperatures, rain and great golf! All were the case for the opening round of the 2016 of the Kentucky PGA Kaiser Cup at Belterra Resort Golf Course in Florence, Indiana on April 11. A team of top KPGA Class A Professionals took on a team of top KPGA Member Assistants and apprentices for a chance at clinching the Kaiser Cup, named for Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame Member and great KPGA Professional, Bill Kaiser. Serious bragging rights are also always on the line for this fun event.
The competition began with four ball matches (contested over 9-holes). The Assistants set the early pace with a lead of 3-2. In Match 1 – two young assistants took down a duo of college coaches as Daniel Iceman of Weissinger Hills and Bobby Newberry of Hunting Creek defeated Adam Gary of Western Kentucky University and Otis Smith of Midway College 3&2. Strong competitors Patrick Vadden of Audubon and Chad Douglas of Louisville Country Club (both Assistant PGA Professionals at their facilities) defeated equally talented Aaron McDowell of Gay Brewer, Jr. Golf Course and Matt Hermann of Oldham County Country Club 3&2. The third match featured the Captains of both squads. Assistant Captain John Bachman of Big Spring and Logan Watts of Louisville Country Club edged out Professional Captain Blake Watts of Wildwood Country Club and Dan Utley of Owl Creek Country Club. Professionals taking home points for their team were Corey Stith of Tates Creek and Alex Martin of Club Car defeating Andrew Lardner of Seneca and Myles Mahan of Hurstbourne 4&2 and Chris Redle of Golf House Kentucky and Michael Johnson of Glasgow defeating David Huffman of Seneca and Steven Conley of Cherry Blossom.
The afternoon foursome matches were canceled after severe weather moved into the area and play ceased for the remainder of the day. 18-hole singles matches will resume on April 12. We are anticipating a great finish!
