LOUISVILLE – A total of 39 teams across four Divisions competed in the 2018 Four Ball Championship with the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour presented by Musselman-Kirchdorfer at Audubon Country Club in Louisville. Mother Nature finally cooperated by providing warm temperatures, but the course proved challenging to the teams participating.
In the Boys High School Yardage Division, the team of Ty Elpers (Louisville) and Robbie Bender (Louisville) fired a 70 (-2) on Sunday to come back from three shots down heading into the second round. Their 2-Day total of 144 (Even) was strong enough to earn a 2-stroke victory. The team of Drew Stultz (Greenup) and Blake Evans (West Liberty) shot a second round 71 (-1) to tie first round leaders Kannon Tucker (Somerset) and Caleb Honeycutt (Somerset) at 146 (+2). Stultz-Evans made a par on the second playoff hole to claim the Runner-Up spot. All three teams earned an invitation to compete in the Musselman-Kirchdorfer Invitational in July as well as a Golden Ticket for the Junior PGA Championship Qualifier.
In the Girls High School Yardage Division, the team of Taylor Edlin (Louisville) and Petyon Schaffer (Lexington) fired a 72 (-1) in the second round to win by one shot over the team of Delia Gibbs (Lexington) and Laney Frye (Nicholasville). Gibbs-Frye held a one shot lead after the first round, and extended their lead to two shots after 9 holes on Sunday. Behind three birdies on the Back 9, Edlin-Schaffer were able to edge Gibbs-Frye by one shot. Players from both teams earn an invitation to participate in the Musselman-Kirchdorfer Invitational in July as well as a Golden Ticket for the Junior PGA Championship Qualifier. The team of Kate Hanni (Ashland) and Savannah Howell (Calvert City) finished in 3rd place with a 2-round total of 151 (+5).
In the Boys 14 & Under Division, the team of Kash Albarado (Louisville) and Peyton Bonny (Prospect) fired the round of the tournament with a second round 64 (-8) to win by 7 shots. Their round featured 7 birdies and an eagle on the Par 5 seventh hole, and their 2-Day total of 138 (-6) was the best of all Divisions. They played with the Runner-Up team of Jackson Finney (Louisville) and Drew Tinsley (Louisville) who fired an impressive 70 (-2) on Sunday to finish at 145 (+1) total. The team of Camden Smith (Louisville) and Joseph Powers (Louisville) improved their first round score by 10 shots to finish in 3rd Place two shots ahead of Dylan Stultz (Greenup) and Boone Gibson (Greenup).
In the Girls 14 & Under Division, the team of Abigail Sutherland (Glenview) and Janie Morgan (Louisville) started the day with a 4-shot lead, and extended their lead on Sunday to claim the Championship. The team of Cameron Hill (Vine Grove) and Avery Shacklette (Rhodelia) finished as the Runner-Up. A birdie on the fourth hole by Hill-Shacklette moved them within 3 shots of the lead, but the consistent play of Sutherland-Morgan allowed them to finish in the top spot at the end of the day.
Thank you to the staff and membership at Audubon Country Club for providing an opportunity for the participants to enjoy the well conditioned test of golf at one of Louisville’s finest clubs. This is the first year for the Four Ball Championship on the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour schedule, and we look forward to continuing the fine tradition started with the MKGT with this event.
