Previewing the 108th Clark's Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur
Men’s State Amateur set to begin in Bowling Green on Tuesday.
BOWLING GREEN, KY (June 13, 2022) – The Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur is set to be staged at Indian Hills Country Club for the first time in the championship’s history. The 108th edition of the oldest golf tournament in Kentucky will visit the Bowling Green facility this week that first opened for business in 1956.
Before it was a country club, the land was an apple orchard featuring Indian artifacts scattered across the land, hence where the name “Indian Hills” originated. Nine holes were available to play when the club began operations with another nine added a decade later in the mid-1960s. William Langford completed that work, but a renovation led by Bob Cupp in 1996 provided the shaping to how the holes at Indian Hills sit today.
Many of the views people take in at Indian Hills this week are far different than what they were this time last year. The facility’s outstanding new clubhouse was under construction after the previous edition was burned to the ground in an overnight fire in December 2019. Then in December 2021, with the new clubhouse just recently opened, the devastating tornadoes that impacted western Kentucky made their way through Indian Hills and ravaged the southwest part of the golf course. Thankfully, the clubhouse was spared, but multiple holes that had been lined with trees are now far more open than they had been previously.
Indian Hills’ routing has been altered for this championship. The front nine plays in its traditional order, but the back nine will begin with the usual 13th hole and end with what is ordinarily the 12th hole. This change was made primarily to keep players starting their rounds on the 10th tee from beginning on a par-three. Now, the opening hole of the back nine will be a reachable par-five while the championship will close on what generally plays as the hardest hole on the golf course.
As for the 156 players in the field this week, they range from 16 years of age (Jameson Corbin, Caleb King, Reed Richey, Cam Roberts, Jack Talbott, Tyler Wirth) to 73 (Elmo Greer). 46 players are in the field through an exemption while the other 110 successfully advanced through one of eight qualifiers that were held across the state from mid-May through early June.
To determine this week’s victor, 54 holes of stroke play will be contested with players completing one round each day. After the second round on Wednesday, a cut will trim the field to the top 70 players and ties ahead of Thursday’s final round.
There are five past champions of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur who are in the field this week. Those players, the year(s) they won this championship, and their first round starting time on Tuesday are listed below.
- Scott Beard (1984) – 9:30 a.m. CDT off hole 1
- Jordan Blann (2009, 2010) – 8:40 a.m. off hole 1
- Tom Campbell (2014) – 8:30 a.m. off hole 1
- Andy Roberts (2016) – 9:40 a.m. off hole 1
