The Competitors of the 108th Clark's Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur

The first of several major championships within Kentucky golf kicks off this week from Indian Hills Country Club in Bowling Green. There, the 108th Clark's Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur will be contested with 156 gentlemen seeking to win this historic tournament that was first played in 1911. These are the players looking to make history by claiming the premier tournament within the Kentucky Golf Association and playing for the right to call themselves a State Amateur champion.

Field list as of Thursday, June 9.

Tyler Allred - Allred has a reputation of making birdies in bunches so he would be a fun player to keep an eye on this week. He did miss the cut in this championship last year at Audubon Country Club, but the member of Nevel Meade Golf Club is aiming for better success this year after qualifying at his home facility last month.

Alexander Bassel - For the second consecutive year, Bassel made it into the championship field through the Second Chance Qualifier. He shot 73 (+1) at Heritage Hill to submit his place in Bowling Green this week. He plays college golf for the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech and is a graduate of Lexington Christian Academy.

Scott Beard - A past champion of this event having won it in 1984 just down the road at Bowling Green Country Club. That came back in the days of this event being contested with four rounds instead of three. At age 61, he is the oldest of the five past champions competing this week.

Walker Beck - This Newburg, Indiana native now plays golf for Murray State. In 2021, Beck placed 25th at the Indiana State Amateur and had an 11th place showing at the Evansville City Championship.

Justin Begley - A recent high school graduate from Manchester, Begley will begin his college golf career this fall with the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky. He had a top-ten finish in an AJGA event last summer which came at the GreatLIFE Junior Challenge presented by Sanford Health.

Riley Bender - A recent high school graduate of St. Xavier, Bender is in the field after shooting 37 (+1) in the qualifier at Nevel Meade. He finished T40 in last year’s Kentucky Open at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club, a finish that was also recorded by…

Robbie Bender - his older brother! Even more ironically, they were the only players in the field to finish T40 last year at the State Open. Robbie is a member of the Indiana Hoosiers’ men’s golf team and would not be a surprising name to see near the top of the leaderboard this week. Their sister Ryan is a member of University of Kentucky’s women’s golf team.

Joe Benton - Benton is looking ahead to his redshirt sophomore year at Eastern Kentucky and as a member of the Colonels’ Men’s Golf team. He graduated from Estill County High School in 2020. He qualified for this tournament through the qualifier at Bellefonte Country Club.

J.R. Bertram - Hailing from Shelbyville and representing Shelbyville Country Club, Bertram advanced through the Indian Hills qualifier with a score of 73 (+2). He is one of the few players in this field who competed in both the State Am and the State Open in 2021.

Jordan Blann- The Bowling Green resident is a two-time champion of this event. He won in consecutive years, getting the job done in 2009 at Keene Trace – Champions Trace and at Gibson Bay Golf Course in 2010. The former Kentucky Wildcat looks to add another title to his name this week.

Tristan Blevins - Blevins shot 77 (+5) in the qualifier at Griffin Gate which put him into a playoff for guaranteed spots. He was on the proper side of the four-for-two extra holes match which now has the former Campbellsville University golfer in the field.

Seth Bohl - Originally from Barbourville and now a member of the Campbellsville University men’s golf team. In his senior season this past year, he had an average score of 76.32 while being lauded for his work in the classroom. He was an NCCAA scholar athlete and Academic All-MSC.

Andrew Buse -  Buse is no stranger to the top of leaderboards. After a first round lead and eventual T5 finish in 2020’s Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Mid-Amateur, the Louisville native has competed in big events before, but will look to rebound after missing the cut in the 2021 State Am at Audubon Country Club.

Cameron Buse - Cameron is the son of Andrew. He is a graduate of Whitefield Academy and plans on going to the University of Louisville in the fall. He qualified at Nevel Meade Golf Club with a score of 37 (+1).

Tom Campbell - A past champion having won in 2014 at Cherry Blossom Golf & Country Club, the high point in a career full of memorable moments for Campbell. Another was notched last month when he won the Kentucky Senior Match Play Championship at Griffin Gate Golf Club. While that was his first senior victory since turning 50 two years ago, he is the two-time reigning Tom Musselman Player of the Year, distinguishing the best male amateur between the ages of 50-59.

G.R. Chandler - Chandler’s round of 74 (+2) at Griffin Gate was good enough for a spot in this year’s State Am. His home course is Madisonville Country Club. He represented Team KGA in last year’s Challenge Cup.

Benjamin Cirgin - A member of Boone’s Trace National Golf Club and a resident of Richmond, Cirgin used a round of 75 (+3) at the Griffin Gate qualifier to punch his ticket in this week’s field.

Jacob Cook - One of the popular picks to win this week, Cook has a deep track record on the golf course that was recently added to when he shared medalist honors of the U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Kearney Hill Golf Links. Cook continually puts his name near the top of the leaderboard in the biggest state competitions, evidenced by a T4 in this championship last year and a runner-up finish in the 2020 Kentucky Open.

Connor Coombs - A Murray State graduate who has played in each of the last two Kentucky Opens. He finished T64 at Triple Crown Country Club in 2020 and was on the wrong side of the cutline last year at Persimmon Ridge.

C.J. Corum - A University of Pikeville golfer and former Clay County standout from the junior ranks as he was the 2019 Region 9 Player of the Year. A tough first round last year in this championship at Audubon Country Club derailed his hopes of making the cut, but a good bounceback round of 71 (-1) nearly got him through to the last round.

Jason Cox - Cox is the Head Coach of both the men’s and women’s golf teams at Brescia University. He is 47 years of age and plays out of The Pearl Club in Owensboro. He was the first alternate from the qualifier at Indian Hills, but has since made his way into the field.

Michael Crabtree - Not to be confused with the former NFL wide receiver, the Nicholasville golfer made it into the field with ease from the Griffin Gate qualifier when he got medalist honors with a round of 66 (-6). That was the best score by five shots.

Kevin Cumiskey - Originally from Kansas, Cumiskey relocated to Kentucky when he accepted a teaching position at Eastern Kentucky University. He now works as a Business Development Manager at Amteck in Lexington. He qualified for last year’s U.S. Mid-Am after finishing in the top-three at a qualifier held at Gibson Bay Golf Course. Kamaren Cunningham - A member of the Murray State Racers, Cunningham tied for third in the Paxton Park qualifier with 73 (+2). He is originally from Dover, Tennessee.

Evan Davis - Someone that would not surprise anybody who follows golf in Kentucky if he went on to win this week. The Belmont golfer out of Lexington has USGA National Championship experience and a runner-up finish in the 2019 Kentucky Open among other items on his decorated resume.

Shawn Deweese - A St. Xavier graduate who now plays collegiately for Bellarmine, DeWeese narrowly missed the cut in last year’s State Amateur and State Open. Finishing T4 at the strong field assembled for the Nevel Meade qualifier could signify better fortunes this week.

Alex Doss - A Northern Kentucky University graduate, Doss has really made a name for himself with his list of golfing accomplishments; his senior season (2020-21) earned him second team all-Horizon League status, a T3 finish at the Wright State Invitational, and victory in the Tony Blom Metropolitan Amateur Championship.

James Duffy - Duffy plays out of Nevel Meade Golf Club in Prospect which is also where Duffy put himself into the field. He shot 38 (+2) where a birdie on the difficult par-three 8th proved to be huge in him being able to get in this field.

Cooper Eberle - Shooting 75 (+3) in the Traditions Golf Club qualifier put Eberle into this field. He comes into this tournament fresh off a T37 finish in the Kentucky Boys Junior PGA Championship. His father Jason is the PGA Head Golf Professional at Gibson Bay Golf Course.

Matt Epperson - One of the top mid-ams in the state, proven by the fact he won the 2019 Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Mid-Am at the University Club of Kentucky. More recently, he won the 2021 Kentucky Team Championship at Kearney Hill Golf Links with Andy Roberts and finished T8 at that summer’s State Am at Audubon Country Club.

Blake Evans - A former two-time Kentucky PGA Junior Tour Player of the Year. Evans boasts one of the best handicap indexes of any player in the field with +4.9. He was one shot shy from making the cut in the 2021 championship at Audubon Country Club.

Jackson Finney - A recent graduate from St. Xavier who begins his college golf career this fall with the Cincinnati Bearcats. His father Mike is a PGA Professional and serves as the Director of Instruction at University of Louisville Golf Club.

Elmo Greer - The oldest player in the field at age 73. He shot 75 (+5) in the qualifier at Bellefonte Country Club on May 28 to get in the field. That was worth a T4 finish that day and saw him beat several players less than half his age.

Tid Griffin - An Owensboro native that tied for tenth in the qualifier Indian Hills hosted. Griffin shot 73 (+2) that day. He is the CEO of Griffin Residuals which is based out of his home city.

Francesco Guarneri - Hailing from Santiago, Chile, Francesco “Keko” Guarneri played at the University of the Cumberlands and then transferred to Eastern Kentucky University two years ago. He finished T51 in this tournament last year at Audubon, but was even or under-par in each of his last two rounds that week.

Billy Gussler - A sophomore at Rhodes College, Gussler was the medalist at the qualifier held at his home course, Bellefonte Country Club. He shot 71 (+1) that day and has gone much lower at Bellefonte during the AJGA NRP Bluegrass Junior, like in 2020 when he finished T3 at that event.

Austin Gutgsell -  A former golfer at LSU and past competitor in PGA TOUR events, Gutgsell would be a solid pick to contend this week. He shot 36 (E) in the Nevel Meade qualifier which was good enough for a top-ten finish there and a punched ticket to get to Indian Hills.

Alex Hadden - From Eminence, Hadden is a member of the men’s golf team at Henderson State. He was the medalist in the qualifier at Nevel Meade Golf Club thanks to his score of 33 (-3). He recorded four birdies during those nine holes which led that the field in that department as well.

Ballard Harris - A Louisvillian at the age of 30, Harris had an adventurous nine holes during the Nevel Meade qualifier. The good: he made two birdies during that round. The bad: he made a triple bogey on the par-three 5th. While it was a roadblock, it didn’t stop him from qualifying after finishing T14. His resolve is clearly strong and something he hopes will be an asset to his chances this week.

Ryan Harris - A native of Edmonton, Kentucky and not Edmonton, Alberta whose beloved Oilers were just swept in the Western Conference Final by the Colorado Avalanche. Harris qualified for this championship at Danville Country Club with a round of 75 (+3).

Kevin Heitz - A Trinity alumnus, his father Pat has been a long-time member of the coaching staff for the Shamrocks. Kevin struck one too many shots to make the cut at Audubon last year, but is back in the field after shooting the second-best score in the qualifier held at Griffin Gate.

Clayton Ison - Ison is a member at Bellefonte Country Club, which is the qualifier he competed in for this championship. Despite finishing as first alternate that day, the Ashland native has made it into the field.

Brad Jeffries - Jeffries is from Liberty and qualified for this championship at Griffin Gate Golf Club where his round of 75 (+3) earned him a T6 finish in that qualifier, easily making it through. This will be his last State Am as a 20-something as he will turn 30 years old next March.

He then tied for second at the Duke Nelson Invitational with a total of 143 (75-68). Slow starts clearly don’t bother him as he can mount a charge.

Caleb King - Should he win this week, the headline of Thursday’s press release will be “King of the Indian Hills.” He’s had a good season on the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour so far with a T5 in the Junior Falls Cities being his top individual result. He is from Crestwood and 16 years of age.

Owen King - The older brother of Caleb and the headline tidbit holds true in this case as well. He had a top-three finish in the Spring Classic at Nevel Meade Golf Club earlier this season which boasted one of the strongest fields the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour has had so far this year.

He is the great-grandson of Dwight Gahm, the founder of Valhalla Golf Club.

Last fall, he finished in the top-ten at the KGCA All-State Championship and in the top-twenty of the KHSAA State Championship. Two good finishes to close out your senior year.

Stephen Montgomery - A member of Lexington Country Club who calls Nicholasville home. He graduated from Transylvania University in 2013 and is now the Dealer Principal of Montgomery CDJR.

Cam Roberts - The pride of Robinson Creek, Roberts has made an impression on many golfers in Kentucky for his friendliness and maturity at just 16 years of age. This will be his first start in the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur. He received both the Gay Brewer, Jr. and Justin Thomas Grants in 2021.

Camden Robertson - New to Kentucky, Robertson is originally from Texarkana, Texas, which as the name implies, is right on the edge of Texas and Arkansas. He had the low gross score in KGA Am Series #2 last month at Shawnee Golf Course thanks to a round of 67 (-3).

Alec Silchuk - A resident of Franklin and a member at Franklin Country Club, Silchuk missed out on getting a qualifying spot at Indian Hills, but rebounded at Heritage Hill during the Second Chance Qualifier to get in. A round of 74 (+2) that day got him into the field with room to spare.

He shot 68 (-3) in that round which was the second-best score, but he made the most birdies of any of those players with eight during his round. He now attends Kentucky State University and is one of the leaders of their men’s golf team. He was tied for second in the Danville Country Club qualifier with a round of 71 (-1).

Drake Stepter- Stepter has been one of the hottest players in the state during the last calendar year. After the passing of his father last July, Stepter truly went out and did it for his dad, winning the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Mid-Am at Bellefonte Country Club by five shots. He also had a nice performance at Audubon Country Club for last year’s State Amateur, where he finished T16.

Eric Straub - An attorney from Paducah, Straub represented the Commonwealth in last year’s U.S. Mid-Am at Sankaty Head in Massachusetts. By competing in that USGA championship, he earned an exemption into this week’s event.

Drew Stultz - The qualifier at Bellefonte Country Club is where Stultz gained entry after firing 75 (+5) during that round. He is a member of the Transylvania University men’s golf team and represents the Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Dylan Stultz - The younger brother of Drew did one stroke better in the Bellefonte Country Club qualifier, which was also the pathway for his entry into this championship. He has competed in the KHSAA Boys State Championship each of the last three years.

James Sweeney - From Crescent Springs, Sweeney qualified for last year’s U.S. Senior Amateur in Detroit. Doing so guaranteed him a spot in this field. At age 64, he is one of just five players aged 60 or older competing this week.

David Sykes - After not getting through the qualifier at Paxton Park, Sykes had better luck in the Second Chance Qualifier at Heritage Hill when his score of 75 (+3) got him through. That ended up being the number to qualify, so Sykes quite literally got one of the last spots available. He is one of eight senior golfers in the field and a member of Rolling Hills Country Club.

Jack Talbott - One of the youngest players in the field at age 16. He is set to graduate in 2024 from Trinity High School. He qualified at Nevel Meade Golf Club with a round of 36 (E) which earned him a top-ten finish.

Justin Tereshko - Arguably one of the top players to have not won this championship previously, Tereshko has played well so far this year. He put on a show at Griffin Gate Golf Club during the Kentucky Match Play Championship before being edged out by Denver Haddix in the title match. He posted a top-five finish in this championship two years ago at Lexington Country Club. He is the Head Coach of the Bellarmine Knights’ men’s golf team.

Christian Tooley - A resident of Roundhill, which according to the town’s Wikipedia page has just two businesses; an auto repair shop and a convenience store. Tooley plays out of Indian Hills, however, and will have the advantage of being very familiar with the golf course when competing this week.

Keith Tooley - The older brother of Christian qualified in the event Indian Hills hosted in May with a 74 (+3) and then got through the four-for-three playoff that followed. He is an alumnus of Union College with whom he played golf for.

Cameron Travis - The Richmond native finished T31 in this championship last year in Louisville. He played high school golf for Madison Central and started his college career with the University of the Cumberlands before transferring to Morehead State.

Matthew Troutman- A recent graduate at Christian Academy of Louisville, Troutman is set to play golf for Oklahoma in the fall. He had a remarkable 2021 which was highlighted by victory in the KHSAA Boys State Championship at nearby Bowling Green Country Club and also posted top-five finishes in the Kentucky Open at his home club of Persimmon Ridge along with the Barbasol Junior Championship.

Kannon Tucker - A sophomore at Bellarmine University and Somerset native, Tucker tied for second place with a 71 (-1) at Danville Country Club to qualify for this championship.

Ryan Tucker - After finishing as the third alternate in the Danville Country Club qualifier, Tucket made sure he would be in the tournament one way or another when he finished T7 in the Second Chance Qualifier at Heritage Hill. His round of 75 (+3) that day paved the way for him to get to Indian Hills.

Greg Turcotte - The Lexington native who plays out of Keene Trace Golf Club recently competed in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship in Alabama with Matthew Martin. Doing so led to his entry into this championship.

Kevin Waldie - A candidate for the friendliest player in the field, beneath Waldie’s smile, is a stellar golf game. He finished T46 in last year’s Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur. Waldie is from Lewisport and played his college golf at Brescia University in Owensboro.

Hayden Warren- The youngest player to qualify for Team KGA in last year’s Challenge Cup which took place at Big Spring Country Club - Harmony Landing Course. Originally from Owensboro, he will soon be playing college golf at nearby Western Kentucky University. He and his brother Stephen took the first KGA championship of 2022 in May with a four-shot victory in the Kentucky Team Championship at Frankfort Country Club.

Stephen Warren - The older brother of Hayden and the second part of that winning duo from the Kentucky Team Championship. Stephen has had plenty of experience playing at Indian Hills Country Club has been a member of the WKU men’s golf team. He shot 69 (-2) there in last year’s KGA Invitational to win that event.

Zach Watterson - An upcoming senior at Lee County High School and the very recent champion of the Kentucky Boys Junior PGA Championship. He shot a two-day total score of 140 (-4) at Gibson Bay Golf Course to win by a stroke after tying for first in that same tournament last year. He is also the reigning Player of the Year from the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour’s 16-18 Division.

Brody Webb - A junior at Morehead State University originally from Georgetown, Webb finished his sophomore season with MSU with a 77.11 stroke average. He tied seventh with a 76 (+6) at Bellefonte Country Club to qualify.

Tyson Webb - Webb is from Olive Hill and 19 years old. He played in the qualifier at Bellefonte Country Club and finished as the second alternate in that event, but a spot in the field has opened for him. He plays collegiately for Transylvania University.

T.A. Wells - He competed in the qualifier at Indian Hills Country Club and posted 75 (+4). That didn’t guarantee him a spot originally, but his position as second alternate did come in handy as it allowed him to make his way in the field once spots opened up. He will sleep in his own bed this week as a Bowling Green resident and plays out of Bowling Green Country Club.

Ben Wheeler - Wheeler is the club president at Indian Hills, so this is bound to be a special but busy week for him. He qualified in the qualifier that Indian Hills hosted in mid-May when he shot 72 (+1).

Justin Wheeler - Wheeler is a former student of Eastern Kentucky University and now works at the institution. During his time as a student, he was in the PGA Golf Management program before transitioning full-time to business school. He shot 75 (+3) in the Griffin Gate qualifier to lock up his spot at Indian Hills.

Mason Williams - A Bowling Green native, he tied for tenth with a 73 (+2) at the Indian Hills Country Club qualifier. Williams is a recent graduate of Georgia Southern University, but surely left his legacy: shooting par or better in 12 of 18 rounds played and winning the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate twice.

Colten Wilson - Wilson is heading to Morehead State University in the fall for college golf. He was one of the recipients of the 2020 Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant. At Audubon last year, he was two shots south of the cutline and will look to improve on that this time around. A runner-up finish in the Danville qualifier bodes well for him.

Tyler Wirth - Wirth has had a solid season so far on the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour. He’s won twice, including a big one by claiming the Junior Falls Cities one month ago at Seneca Golf Course.

Tony Wise - Wise scored one of the biggest victories of his career last summer when he won the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Senior Amateur at the University of Louisville Golf Club. It was made even better with a shower of beer off the 18th green. He was the low senior in this championship one year ago when he finished T38 at Audubon after posting three even-par rounds of 72.

Rylan Wotherspoon - An incoming freshman at the University of Cincinnati, Wotherspoon had an exceptional junior golf career. In 2020, he was named Mr. Golf and won the KGCA All-State Championship. In 2021, he tied for first in the Kentucky Boys Junior PGA Championship and reached the matchplay stage of the U.S. Junior Amateur.

Hunter York - York had a strong showing in last year’s State Match Play Championship at The Country Club of Owensboro, making it all the way to the semifinals. He played college golf for Murray State in the early 2010s and now plays out of Benton Golf & Country Club.

Rocco Zakutney - A recent St. Mary High School graduate, Rocco takes his skills to UT-Martin this fall. He helped his team win the First Region championship, and Zakutney won five titles his senior season. He finished runner-up in April’s GHK Classic #1 presented by Mobile Pro Shop at Country Club of Paducah.

Hayden Zimmerer - After graduating high school at Christian Academy of Louisville in 2017, Zimmerer has been playing college golf for the Dayton Flyers, where he is a graduate student. This past season, he turned in a career-best sixth-place finish at Marshall's Joe Feaganes Invitational. In the 2021 State Am, he posted a top-ten finish and got progressively better with each round with scores of 71-70-69.
