LEXINGTON, KY (July 6, 2020) – For the second straight week, mother nature failed to cooperate for the Kentucky PGA Section as a round of late-afternoon thunderstorms prohibited the event from being scored as an 18-hole competition. Play was suspended at approximately 4:45 p.m. EDT due to lightning that had crept into the near vicinity of Greenbrier Golf & Country Club. After a significant delay that took 18 holes out of the equation, the groups still on the front nine resumed play at 7:20 p.m. EDT to make it a 9-hole event. 

For the second straight year, the team of Steve Cox, Christen Neleski, Lisa Day, and Pat Klinglesmith emerged victorious at Greenbrier having shot a score of 61 (-11) in which the format took the two best balls with the amateurs' net scores being counted. It's a one-stroke victory for the team of Larue County Golf Course's Head Professional, besting the team of Sara Stephens, Shelli Bitter, Jenny Meyer, and Becky Wesdorp who recorded 62 (-10).

Today's low professional is Tom Walters via his 34 (-2) on the outward nine. Blake Watts came one stroke behind at 35 (-1) while Sara Stephens and Nathan Downs finished in a tie for third place at 36 (E). Cox came out victorious once more as the low senior professional where his 35 (-1) clipped Richard Schmitt by one stroke. 

NOTES AND STATS

• The par-four 11th was not to be trifled with as it was the hardest hole of the day. At a stroke-to-par average of +1.07, only six birdies and nineteen pars were made on it.
• The par-five 15th was far kinder to players being the easiest hole at +0.60. Two eagles and nine birdies led the way in making this the prime opportunity for players to gain ground.
• Cox's first Section appearance of the season displays his game is still in the form he's shown in recent years. It bodes well for his forthcoming title defense in the Kentucky Senior Open in just under two months.

The KPGA would like to thank Kelly Williams, PGA and Nathan Downs, PGA along with their staff for hosting today's competition. The Section's competitive focus for the rest of the month now shifts to its State Opens as qualifying for the 101st Kentucky Open at Triple Crown Country Club is in progress. Many of today's professionals will see their next action on July 28th for the first round of the competition. For the Section's females and other top women golfers across the state, the 24th Kentucky Women's Open will begin two weeks from tomorrow at Heritage Hill Golf Club.
