Evan Cox Sets Course Record and Wins 2024 Kentucky Mid-Amateur Championship

LEXINGTON, KY – The final round of the 2024 Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Mid-Amateur was one for the record books. Beautiful weather brought loads of scoring throughout the entire day, and eventually a new Kentucky Mid-Amateur champion was crowned.

The senior, masters, and legends divisions kicked off the morning wave of the final round of play at Griffin Gate Golf Club on Thursday morning. Davis Boland captured the senior division title with a second-round 67(-5) taking him to 7-under-par for the tournament. In the masters division, James Sweeney was the only competitor to shoot under par both rounds and claimed the title with a final score of 141(-3). Franklin Stivers came out of the gates firing, recording four straight birdies on the first four holes to jump out to an early lead in the legends division. Stivers never looked back, finishing with a 36-hole score of 143(-1) to claim the division.

Chaos ensued in the championship division, with both Evan Cox and Ben Kendrick recording seven birdies on the front nine. Both golfers made the turn with matching scores of 29(-7). Day one leader Justin Tereshko did the best that he could to keep up with the youngsters and birdied the first three holes. At the turn, Cox held the lead at -17 while Tereshko and Kendrick sat two shots back at -15.

Both Cox and Kendrick birdied the first hole on the back nine, keeping the gap at two shots. The duo each parred the next two holes, but a double bogey on hole #12 effectively took Justin Tereshko out of the race. Cox extended his lead with a birdie on the par-four thirteenth hole, but a bogey for Cox on hole #14 kept Kendrick within striking distance. Unfortunately for Kendrick, that strike never came. The former University of the Cumberlands golfer was unable to make another birdie on the back nine and finished with an impressive score of 64(-8). The score stood as the course record momentarily, but only until Evan Cox turned in his scorecard five minutes later with an outrageous 63(-9), the lowest score post-renovation at Griffin Gate Golf Club. The two young golfers put on quite the show, but it was Cox who came out on top and claimed the victory with a 54-hole score of 197(-19).

Cox has enjoyed quite a successful summer with this being his second win. He also joined forces with former Kentucky Wildcats teammate Jacob Cook to win the KGA Team Championship at Lake Forest Country Club just over a month ago. Congratulations, Evan, on the amazing accomplishment!
