Preview: 25th Clark's Pump-N-Shop KY Mid-Amateur

As the golf season in Kentucky begins to wind down with autumn approaching, the season’s final major golf tournament will commence on Monday with the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Mid-Amateur. University Club of Kentucky’s Big Blue course will host the 25th edition of this event on September 23-24 which will mark the third time the tournament has been contested at the university-owned facility. It has previously hosted the Kentucky Mid-Amateur in 2002 and 2003 which led to John Kartheiser and Dave Macke winning the respective championships.

Neither Kartheiser or Macke are in this year’s field, meaning that University Club of Kentucky will crown its third unique Kentucky Mid-Amateur champion. Defending champion Andy Roberts highlights the list of notable players in the field. Roberts seeks his third Kentucky Mid-Amateur title, having won at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club in 2010 before claiming last year’s title at Traditions Golf Club. Roberts’ quest for consecutive victories will begin at 10:18 a.m. EDT off the tenth tee on Monday morning. Other notable players competing include the following:

  • David Jasper – The Kentucky Mid-Amateur trophy belonged to Jasper for more than 1,000 straight days from 2013-2015 when he won the event three consecutive times at Champion Trace Golf Club, Audubon Country Club and Lexington Country Club. The Prospect product will begin his march towards a fourth win in seven years at 10:45 a.m. EDT on number ten.
  • Joshua Rhodes – The 2011 Kentucky Mid-Amateur champion at Owensboro Country Club hopes to capture a second title in this event. He will tee off the tenth hole at 9:24 a.m. EDT on Monday.
  • Greg Engle – This century’s first Kentucky Mid-Amateur champion, the 2000 winner at Lexington Country Club tees off at 8:57 a.m. EDT on the first hole. Engle was also the competition’s second-ever edition, capturing the trophy in 1996.
  • Bruce Walters – Of the names etched on the Kentucky Mid-Amateur trophy, Walters’ name will always be the first as a result of his win in the tournament’s inaugural competition in 1995. He tees off the first hole at 10:45 a.m. EDT.
  • Nick Johnston – Johnston etched his name in Kentucky golf history at Country Club of Paducah in June when he won the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur. Another KGA win in the Mid-Amateur would cap off a decorated year for the Louisville resident. 9:33 a.m. EDT off the tenth hole marks his opening round tee time.
  • Andrew Strother – Strother enters this event on a high note, having just locked up the season-long titles in both the gross and net divisions in the KGA Amateur Series. He will begin the competition on the tenth hole at 8:48 a.m. EDT.

This year’s competition will be decided via 36 holes of stroke play. In addition to the Kentucky Mid-Amateur title, there will be three other divisional awards on the line. The Senior Division (players aged 50-59), Masters Divisions (60-69) and Legends Division (70+) will play out under the same format.

Golf House Kentucky will have updates throughout the competition on its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages. A live video will be available to view on Facebook during Tuesday’s final round when the contenders reach the final hole. Another video will become available if a playoff is required to determine a champion.
