Preview: 70th Kentucky PGA Professional Championship
BOWLING GREEN, KY (August 22, 2021) – The Kentucky PGA Professional Championship turns seven decades old this week with the 70th edition of the Section Membership’s premier competition taking place at Bowling Green Country Club.
More than forty Class-A PGA Members from across Kentucky will compete for the honor of being the champion of the Membership’s most prestigious tournament. Additionally, four spots in the 2022 PGA Professional Championship are on the line. That tournament will take place in Austin, Texas next April at Omni Barton Creek. The top twenty finishers in that event will then be exempt for the 2022 PGA Championship which takes place at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
This week’s host, Bowling Green, was founded in 1913 and is perhaps best-known for being the annual site of the KHSAA State Championships each October since 2006. As the top junior golfers in the state have competed on one of their biggest stages at this venue, it’s fitting that many of their instructors and mentors, the Section’s PGA Professionals, get the spotlight at Bowling Green this week.
There are six past victors of the Section Championship who are in this year’s field, led by defending champion Grover Justice, PGA who won by seven shots at Valhalla Golf Club in 2020. He and the other past champions in the field with their first-round tee time are as follows:
- Grover Justice, PGA (2020) – 12:10 p.m. CDT
- John Bachman, PGA (2012, 2014) – 12:00 p.m.
- Ralph Landrum, PGA (1986, 1987) – 12:40 p.m.
- Keith Ohr, PGA (2013, 2015) – 11:50 a.m.
- Andrew Stephens, PGA (2018) – 1:10 p.m.
- Blake Watts, PGA (2010, 2016, 2017, 2019) – 11:50 a.m.
