Boland and Justice Lead the Charge at Day 1 of the 25th Kentucky Senior Open Championship

LA GRANGE, KY – A cool, breezy morning marked the start of the 25th Kentucky Senior Open Championship presented by Golf Genius and Cunningham Yamaha. The two-day event kicked off with a field of 107 golfers consisting of 31 professionals and 76 amateurs. Co-leaders Grover Justice and Davis Boland topped the field with a respectable score of 70 (-1).

Despite the energetic morning breeze, the field got off to a hot start by making 43 birdies through the first two holes. Hole #1, a 501-yard par-five, played the easiest on the day with an average score of 5.03 strokes. Scoring seemed to grind to a halt towards the second half of the front nine, with only 12 birdies made all day on holes five through nine. On the back nine, holes #13 and #14 provided the bulk of the scoring, with 41 birdies and 2 eagles marked down.

Grover Justice, a well-known name in the state, put together a solid round to sit tied atop the leaderboard after the first day of competition. Justice went eleven holes without a blemish on his scorecard before making back-to-back bogeys on holes #12 and #13. He quickly bounced back with a birdie on hole #14 and finished the round with a 70 (-1). A win this week would mark Justice’s second victory of the year, with his first coming as the Low Pro at the 2024 Pro-Scratch Championship in Paducah, KY.

Joining Justice at the top of the leaderboard is Davis Boland of Louisville, KY. The front-nine didn’t treat Boland as well, as he made the turn at one shot over par. Boland’s persistence paid off in the end, with him marking down three birdies in the final six holes to claim his spot at the top of the field.

Play resumes tomorrow morning, July 2, 2024, at 8:00 a.m.
