Previewing the 23rd Kentucky Senior Open
23rd Kentucky Senior Open begins in Richmond on Monday.
RICHMOND, KY (June 26, 2022) – Kentucky’s slate of State Opens begins this week with the 23rd playing of the Kentucky Senior Open. This championship will be the first of three taking place over the next month determining the best players in the state, and this week, it’s top male senior that will be decided.
The University Club at Arlington will be the host site for this 36-hole stroke play event that is scheduled to begin on Monday and conclude on Tuesday. 64 amateurs and 25 professionals comprise the field of 89 players. 58 of whom are in the Championship Division and eligible to win the most prestigious prize in Kentucky senior golf. The other 31 players are at least 60 years of age and will be competing in the Super Senior Division.
For those seeking the premier prize, a stellar field has assembled in hopes their name will join an illustrious list of champions. Leading the list of notable players is defending champion Scott Porter, who prevailed at Heritage Hill Golf Club last year with a three-stroke victory to claim this trophy for the first time. He will begin his title defense at 11:10 a.m. EDT on the 1st tee. Those looking to follow in his footsteps and claim a victory this week include the following gentlemen. Their first-round tee times off hole 1 are in parenthesis.
- Buddy Bryant (10:00 a.m.) – A two-time champion of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur in the late 1990s. Bryant wasn’t far from winning the State Senior Amateur last year, finishing just two shots behind eventual champion Tony Wise.
- Tom Campbell (8:50 a.m.) – Campbell was one of two players to tie for second to Porter last year at Heritage Hill. He broke through for his first senior victory earlier this season by winning the Kentucky Senior Match Play Championship at Griffin Gate Golf Club.
- Rodney Chancey (9:00 a.m.) - Chancey won the Kentucky Senior Team Championship alongside Davis Boland at Danville Country Club in May.
- Steve Cox, PGA (10:50 a.m.) – A past champion of this event as Cox prevailed in 2019 at Houston Oaks Golf Course in Paris. He won the ROLEX Senior Player of the Year within the Section that same year, following his first time earning that accolade in 2013.
- Jeff Lyons (11:20 a.m.) – Lyons was the leader of this championship after the first round in 2021 when he shot 66 (-6). He went on to finish in a tie for second alongside Campbell.
- Bruce Oldendick, PGA (8:50 a.m.) – The Head Golf Professional from Pendleton Hills has won the ROLEX Senior Player of the Year title within the Section three of the last four years, including each of the last two. He was the runner-up in this championship three years ago when Cox edged him out in a playoff.
- Scott Ray (8:40 a.m.) – At the age of 61, Ray was the oldest player to make the cut in the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur at Indian Hills Country Club two weeks ago. He won the Kentucky Senior Match Play Championship two straight years in 2020 and 2021.
- Paxton Song (11:10 a.m.) – Song was a strong performer in the top individual with top-five finishes in the State Senior Open and State Senior Amateur.
Golf House Kentucky will have full coverage of the championship on its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages. When the final group reaches the 18th hole of Tuesday's final round, a live-stream will be available to view on Facebook. Should a playoff be necessary, that will also be live-streamed.
