24th Kentucky Women's Open Preview
SHEPHERDSVILLE, KY (July 20, 2020) – It is officially State Open season in Kentucky. The first of the Kentucky PGA Section’s three Opens begins on Tuesday with the 24th edition of the Kentucky Women’s Open at Heritage Hill Golf Club in Shepherdsville. Forty-nine females will tee it up this week for the competition that will feature two rounds of stroke play. A majority of the field hails from the Commonwealth, but there will be representatives from five other states descending upon Heritage Hill looking to capture the state’s premier female championship.
This will be the second time Heritage Hill stages the competition after previously hosting in 2016. Lydia Gumm, now the Women’s Golf Coach at the University of Houston, was that edition’s winner and is not in the field this week meaning Heritage Hill will have its second unique champion come Wednesday afternoon. A talented group of competitors seek to be that next champion, including the following:
- Christine Lindsey (10:12 a.m. EDT) – A past champion having won in 2002 at Keene Trace (Champions Trace), she leads the contingent of three former champions looking to claim their second career victory in this tournament.
- Sara Stephens (10:24) – A Kentucky PGA Professional, Stephens recorded an impressive top-three finish in the low professional contest at the Pro-Lady Championship earlier this month at Greenbrier Golf & Country Club. The former Kentucky Wildcat is a prime candidate among those looking to win this event for the first time
- Lauren Hartlage (10:24) – The 2018 champion at University of Louisville Golf Club was unable to defend her title last year as the 2019 tournament’s dates fell on the same dates as the U.S. Women’s Amateur did. The 47th ranked player in the WAGR will be tough to beat this week.
- Moyea Russell (10:48) – Russell was last year’s day one leader at Frankfort Country Club before a tough final round dropped her into a tie for eighth place in the end. The Southern Illinois Saluki will seek redemption this year.
- Taryn Walker (11:00) – A former Big Break contestant and the 2011 Kentucky Women’s Open champion at The Standard Club, many folks will be hoping the fan-favorite can etch her name on the trophy for a second time.
- Macie Brown (11:00) – Playing with Walker is Macie Brown, who won the Kentucky Girls Junior PGA Championship at the beginning of the month at The University Club at Arlington. It will be a home game so to speak for Brown this week, who lives a short drive away in Mount Washington.
Golf House Kentucky will have full coverage of the event on its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages. A live video will be available to view on Facebook when the final group reaches its last hole on Wednesday afternoon. Another live video will become available if a playoff is needed to determine a champion.
