It was another day fit more for a European golf vacation than a warm, May day at the Kentucky PGA National Car Rental Pro Am Series at Big Spring Country Club, Inc’s Big Spring Campus on Monday, May 16. Winds, clouds, cool temperatures and a difficult golf course gave the 38 teams all they could handle for 18 holes. The event always brings out some of the best players in the Commonwealth with a Two Best Gross Balls of the Four-Person Team format.
The morning wave of play began in temperatures below 50 degrees but still managed some great scores. The Gay Brewer, Jr. Golf Course Team lead by PGA Head Professional Aaron McDowell and featured Matt Epperson, Chandler Morgan and Steve Humphrey set the tone, posting an eleven-under-par round of 133. They had a one shot advantage over Seneca Golf Course team lead by Assistant PGA Professional Andrew Lardner and featuring Jason Witten, David Jasper and David Brown. Scott Webb of Gibson Bay lead the Low Professional race after the morning wave of play with a round of one-over-par 73. There were several players tied with 75 including Lardner, McDowell, Russ Johnson and Matt Hermann. Barry Bonifield, PGA Head Professional at Crescent Hill lead the Low Senior Professional charge with a round of 77.
Afternoon play continued with tee times between 12:30-2:10 and introduced some slightly warmer temperatures but light rain to the difficult conditions. None of this proved to be any match for Team Audubon lead by PGA Assistant Professional Patrick Vadden and featuring Brendon Doyle, Alex Brey and Nick Lococo – firing a white hot eighteen-under-par 126. Western Kentucky University PGA Head Women’s Golf Coach Adam Gary used his skills to coach his team (John Kernohan, Ellinor Haaig and Ben Wheeler) to a round of 133. The day belonged to Vadden and crew – as Vadden also took home Low Professional Honors with a two-under-par 70. He was two shots clear of Hurstbourne Country Club’s Jesse Massie and Big Spring Assistant PGA Professional, John Bachman. Eastern Kentucky University PGA Men’s Golf Coach, Pat Stephens edged out Bonifield for Low Senior Professional honors.
A special thank you to National Car Rental for their generous support of this Series, as well as Kentucky PGA Business Partners supporting the event: Cutter and Buck, Nike Golf and Texas RoadHouse and all of our professionals and amateurs for a terrific day!
