It was a warm May day for the second installment of the Kentucky Golf Association’s Amateur Series on May 25 at Eagle’s Nest Country Club in Somerset. Luckily any threat of severe weather stayed away from the golf course and a short rain storm could hardly dampen the spirits of this terrific field of over 70 golfers comprised of Senior Division players (ages 55-64), Legends Division players (ages 65-71), Legends Division players (ages 72 and over), Players Division (all ages, gross and net) and Open Division (all ages, gross only). Course conditions were tough with large, deep ravines, hills and elevation changes. Luckily, that was no match for our talented amateur core of golfers – who played some beautiful golf on this Par 71 course!
In the Senior Division, Gary Backlund of Mt. Sterling played to impress with a round of 66 to take home Low Gross Honors. Scott Hansel of Independence finished second with a round of 73 and Mickey Ray of Somerset finished third with a round of 75. Steve Humphrey of Lexington took home Low Net Honors after a round 67 (which was taken from a gross score of 69!). Mike Horan of Carrollton finished second with a 70 and Johnny Belcher of Glasgow finished third with an even-par 71.
In the Masters Division, Louisville’s Terry Bowman played smoothly en route to a round of 75 and the Low Gross Honors. Bill Kinzeler of Hebron finished second with a 76 and Stacy Russell of Richmond finished third with a 78. Rick Smith of Winchester was the Low Net Champ with a round of 69. He edged out Donnie Gibson of Glasgow (70) and Sammy Levinson of Bowling Green (71).
In the Legends Division, Jerry Edwards of Louisville also had a nice round, carding a 78 for Low Gross Honors by one shot over Don Wood and Vernon Denham, both of Louisville. Jerry Dowdy of Louisville had a solid round of 66 for Low Net honors and a three shot victory of George Gupton of Campbellsville. John Wood of Somerset finished third with a 72.
The Open Division also featured some terrific golf with Louisville’s Davis Boland coming out as the victor with a terrific round of 67 and a four shot advantage over Ross Perry of Somerset. Kellen Wilson of Somerset finished third after a round of 73.
The Players Division set the pace early in the day. Don Kohler of Prospect took home Low Gross honors with a round of 77 and Jason Parroco, also of Prospect, took home Low Net honors with a round of 72.
Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who participated!
