Team KGA Clinches Fourth Straight Victory in Coomer Cup supported by 2UNDR
Team KGA uses dominant singles session to win Coomer Cup supported by 2UNDR for fourth straight year.
LOUISVILLE, KY (September 7, 2022) – The annual Ryder Cup-style matches between the top amateurs in Kentucky and the top Kentucky PGA Members has a new name, but the result on Wednesday was the same it’s been since 2019. For the fourth straight time, Team KGA topped Team KPGA to win the first edition of the Coomer Cup supported by 2UNDR, continuing their dominance from when the event was known as the Challenge Cup.
The host of the 2008 Ryder Cup, Valhalla Golf Club, was the site of the friendly competition that celebrates Kentucky golf and its premier players. With each team captained by each organization’s respective President, the event took on a new look this year to commemorate the work and legacy of Bill Coomer, PGA. For more than a quarter-century, Coomer organized and directed the tournaments that both amateurs and PGA Professionals in Kentucky competed in. Beginning with this event, this long-standing tradition within Golf House Kentucky will now pay homage to Coomer’s contributions and the foundation he laid down.
KGA President Jim Thompson was at the helm of his squad’s fourth straight victory and his second as captain. His team and their peers started the day with four-ball matches on Valhalla’s front nine. Team KPGA got on the board first with a victory from Robert Costello, PGA and Bruce Oldendick, PGA, but the amateurs won three of the remaining five matches to take the early advantage. Josh Rhodes from Team KGA was a particular standout, as he was -3 thru 7 holes with his own ball to help himself and Brett Metzger win 3&2.
A 3.5-2.5 tally in favor of the amateurs was replicated in the subsequent foursomes matches on the back nine. Keeping the same matchups from the previous session, an outstanding performance from Jacob Cook and Evan Davis kept momentum on the side of Team KGA. They made four birdies in a five-hole stretch to help create a 7-5 advantage for their teammates entering singles.
With twelve points on the line to close the day on Valhalla’s front nine, the amateurs took three-quarters of them in a dominant final session to seal their fourth consecutive triumph. Of the eight matches that were won outright by a Team KGA member, six of them concluded without the 9th hole needing to be played. Justin Tereshko clinched the winning point in what amounted to a 16-8 victory for the victorious amateurs.
