Former Wildcat Duo Takes Home KGA Team Championship Crown
LOUISVILLE, KY - With temperatures in the mid-90s and nothing more than an intermittent breeze, the 36-hole 2024 KGA Team Championship was a true test of endurance for the 28 teams in attendance. The format was four-ball and the Open Division played 36 holes, kicking off play at 8:00 a.m. in a shotgun start. A mere ten hours after they first teed off at Lake Forest Country Club on Monday morning, former University of Kentucky golfers Evan Cox and Jacob Cook tapped in their final birdie of the day to finish with a score of 129 (-15) and a two stroke win.
The former Wildcat duo got off to an early lead, shooting a 65 (-7) in their morning round. Evan Cox lead the charge early, cashing in six birdies in the group's first round. Despite ever-rising temperatures in the afternoon, Cook and Cox went on to shoot an even lower 64 (-8) in their second 18 holes. This time it was Cook who came in clutch by making five birdies, including three in a row on holes #3-5. The win on Monday adds to quite an impressive list of individual accomplishments for the young duo. Cox won the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament with Virginia Wesleyan University before transferring to UK and has since been inducted into the VWU Athletics Hall of Fame. Cook is a two-time Lexington City Champion along with many other accolades, such as being the low amateur at the 2020 Kentucky Open. Evan Cox will be competing in the 105th Kentucky Open next week at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville.
For the second year in a row, Eric King and Denver Haddix battled their way to a second-place finish with impressive scores of 66 (-6) and 65 (-7) for a total of 131 (-13) over the 36-hole competition.
