The Field is Set for The Clark's Pump-N-Shop Women's Kentucky Amateur
The 96th edition of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Women’s Kentucky Amateur begins at Bowling Green Country Club on Monday.
Bowling Green, KY (June 22, 2023) – Bowling Green Country Club will host the oldest championship in women’s Kentucky golf this coming week. The Bowling Green Facility is most notable for its long-time hosting of the KHSAA High School State Championships. It looks to add a new championship to its history next week starting on Monday, June 26th. Payton Carter took home the title last year at Cherry Blossom. 28 players in the Championship Division are seeking their chance at the title in 2023.
A new format for the championship is being introduced as a Stroke Play component will be added, in addition to the traditional Match-Play component. Players will be guaranteed 36 holes of golf with the first two days being stroke play qualifying. From there, the top four players from each division will move on to Match-Play on Wednesday, June 28th. The championship flight will consist of two semi-final matches in the morning, and one final match to decide our champion. The Senior flights will vary slightly from the championship in the sense that players who finish 3rd and 4th on their leaderboards will play one consolation match and the top two players will play a final match to identify their champions.
Notable players in the Championship Division include these players:
- Macey Brown – Brown won the 2020 KHSAA Girls State Championship at Bowling Green Country Club. The University of Indianapolis Greyhound will be using this to her advantage in next week’s championship.
- Payton Carter - Carter is our defending championship from last year's event and looking for a repeat. The Murray State Racer has had an outstanding college career being named OVC Player of the Year and All-OVC two years in a row. Capturing the 2023 title would be icing on the cake.
- Lexis Fickel – The former Findlay Oiler is continuing to make her comeback to competitive golf at the Women’s Major championship. Fickel has been sidelined with back injuries over the last year or so but is a true contender when healthy. Fickel is also a member of the Golf House Kentucky intern staff for the second year in a row.
- Savannah Howell – A member of the Western Kentucky University Women’s Golf Team, will have a home course advantage next week. Howell was a top female junior golfer in Kentucky winning multiple times on the KPGAJT circuit.
- Mary Keene Marrs – Representing Eastern Kentucky University, Marrs was a very notable junior golfer with over 40 career wins. The fourth-rated junior golfer in the state coming out of high school looks to add the Women’s Amateur to her resume.
- Taryn Walker – A seasoned veteran and no stranger to big competitions, Walker looks to win the title for her second time, the first time coming in 2005.
In addition to the Championship Division, there will be two senior champions crowned in the gross and net brackets. This will be a good preview to see how these ladies will fare later in the year at the Women’s Senior Amateur at Woodson Bend Resort in Mid-September.
Golf House Kentucky will have full coverage of the championship on its Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages. Attendance of the tournament is permitted with spectators welcome free of charge.
