Huge, Petronzio, Wiebe, and Wetterich Advance at Barbasol Championship Monday Qualifier

Final four spots in the Barbasol Championship determined at Monday Qualifier.

RICHMOND, KY (July 4, 2022) – Maclain Huge, Nathan Petronzio, Gunner Wiebe, and Daniel Wetterich successfully made it through the Monday Qualifier at Boone’s Trace National Golf Club to secure each of them a spot in the PGA TOUR event set to take place this week at Keene Trace Golf Club.

80 players teed it up at the start of the day hoping to earn one of the four spots available in Nicholasville, and rounds of 64 (-8) from Huge and Petronzio led the way in the qualification process.

Huge, an alumnus of the Virginia Tech Hokies originally from Lovettsville, Virginia posted two nine-hole scores of 32 (-4) and was bogey-free throughout the day. Southern Methodist’s Petronzio was also bogey-free today en route to sharing medalist honors with Huge. This marks the second straight week the amateur has topped the leaderboard at a Monday Qualifier, having done so last week at the John Deere Classic’s Monday Qualifier as well.

Gunner Wiebe, a native of Colorado who played collegiately for the San Diego Toreros, finished in solo-third with a round of 65 (-7). He currently works as an Assistant Golf Professional within the Southern California PGA Section and like Huge and Petronzio, embarked on a bogey-free round to claim his place in this week’s TOUR event.

A three-for-one playoff was needed to determine the final qualifying spot and it featured Kentuckians Jansen Preston and Fred Meyer along with Cincinnati’s Daniel Wetterich. Each player shot 66 (-6) in regulation which sent them to a sudden-death playoff to determine who would advance. After each player made pars on the 1st and 2nd playoff holes, the 3rd hole (taking place on the par-four 7th) featured each competitor missing the green with their approach shot. Wetterich, chipping first from short of the green, holed his attempt for birdie from 30 feet away to put the pressure on Preston and Meyer, both of whom had gone over the green. From the opposite side of the putting surface, neither player was able to make their attempts, securing Wetterich of the fourth and final spot available.
