Bruce Oldendick Earns Fourth Consecutive Senior Section Championship Victory
LOUISVILLE, KY (August 11, 2021) - Bruce Oldendick’s run of dominance in the Kentucky Senior PGA Professional Championship has extended to a fourth consecutive victory. The Head Golf Professional from Pendleton Hills began the day tied for the lead and ended it with a commanding nine-stroke margin of victory.
A bogey-free final round of 67 (-5) at Hurstbourne Country Club gave Oldendick a total score of 141 (-3) for his latest Senior Section Championship. He fell two strokes behind after Wednesday’s 1st and 2nd holes to Steve Cox, but from that point on Oldendick gained nearly half a stroke per hole on his peers to ultimately enjoy a comfortable victory.
“I didn’t think I could pull this off,” Oldendick said following the tournament’s conclusion. “These guys are tough and I hadn’t been playing real well coming into this week, so my confidence was pretty low. In round one I truly worked on my golf game and then I spent two hours afterwards on the range working on things, and I guess I found something. Sometimes that’s just all it takes.”
For his efforts, Oldendick picks up a first-place check worth $1,360 and will tee it up in the Senior PGA Professional Championship this October in Florida. Joining him in that voyage will be Keith Reese, who finished runner-up to Oldendick, plus Tim Reeves. Their top-three finishes guaranteed them an exemption in that event while four other players hold alternate spots. Steve Cox, Kirk Schooley, Ralph Landrum, and Al Chrouser in that order will be next in line from Kentucky should a spot open up.
NOTES & STATS
- Reeves holed out for eagle on the par-four 17th, which turned out to be the only eagle of the Championship. That eagle turned out to be pivotal as it made the difference in Reeves receiving his automatic exemption rather than entering a playoff for that spot with Cox and Schooley.
- The par-four 2nd was the hardest hole of Wednesday’s round which featured a stroke-to-par average of +0.87. Cox was the only player to record birdie on this hole in round two.
- The par-three 8th was Wednesday’s easiest hole after playing +0.07.
- For the second consecutive day, the back nine was the harder of the two sides and the gap was wider on Wednesday than it was on Tuesday. The disparity between the two sides was 2.25 shots in round two compared to round one’s 1.25.
- The course did play harder on Wednesday compared to Tuesday, as the scoring average increased 0.82 shots to 79.19.
