Nick Johnston Gets a Clean Sweep at Callaway Pro-Assistant
LOUISVILLE, KY (May 24, 2021) – There were four competitions Nick Johnston was eligible to win at Monday’s Callaway Pro-Assistant from Audubon Country Club. The namesake Pro-Assistant, the Pro-Pro, low individual pro, and a blind draw competition that players could enter where they would be randomly paired with another person in the field. Johnston won all of them.
In the Pro-Assistant, he and his Head Golf Professional at Wildwood Country Club, Blake Watts, shot 62 (-10). The format, as it was in each team competition, was four-ball where the best score between the two partners was taken as their score for each hole. Johnson contributed five birdies to that score whereas Watts deposited three of his own. There were also two holes where both players made birdie, making it a bogey-free team score. They won by three shots.
Another Wildwood teammate of Johnston’s teamed up for the Pro-Pro portion of the event, that being Josh Griffin. They recorded a round of 64 (-8) which featured seven counting birdies from Johnston, two from Griffin and just one bogey. The Watts brothers of Logan and Blake came up two shots short in second place.
As for Johnston’s individual round, some faint cries for a 59-watch could be heard ringing around Audubon after he posted a front nine of 30 (-6). He got as low as -7 before ultimately carding a very impressive round of 66 (-6). That ended up being three shots better than his closest pursuer, Keith Ohr, who shot 69 (-3).
The blind draw was kind to Johnston as well, where he was matched with another one of the Section’s top players, Andrew Stephens. Together, they shot 64 (-8) which shared the low round in this competition. Matt Bloom and Jesse Massie were also able to post a score at that mark.
As for the senior professionals, players were perhaps inspired by Phil Mickelson’s record-setting major championship victory yesterday. Bruce Oldendick was the best of the players aged fifty or older, as he shot 72 (E) which bested Kim Shafer by three strokes.
NOTES & STATS
- The players under the Team Callaway umbrella had their own individual competition today as well, with Glenn Garnett victorious in that department after shooting 72 (E) which beat Matt Bloom and Mitchell Moore by a stroke. That means Garnett is the recipient of a bottle of Old Forester, generously donated by Callaway.
- A closest-to-the-hole contest was hosted by Callaway on the par-three 17th where Team Callaway member Eric Voss had the best tee shot, with an impressive shot nestling 34 inches away. He wins a free OGIO golf bag for that accomplishment, which was also provided by Callaway.
- Statistically, the easiest hole of the tournament was the par-four 11th, clocking in at a stroke-to-par average of +0.07. Eleven players made birdie here today.
- The par-three 17th was the hardest hole of the event, making the aforementioned tee shot from Voss all the more impressive. Three birdies in all were made on the hole today which averaged +0.53 across the field.
- There was little difference in difficulty between the two nines at Audubon as the back nine averaged 38.47 strokes while the front nine was slightly harder at 38.67. That adds up to a collective average score of 77.14

The Kentucky PGA Section extends its thanks to Eric Gilliland, PGA Head Golf Professional and his staff for their assistance in making today’s event a success. Appreciation is also expressed towards Tyler Chilson, Tom Campbell and all Callaway representatives for their continued partnership and the elements they added to make today’s event a memorable one.
The Section’s next competition will be a joint one with the Kentucky Golf Association on Tuesday, June 1. Persimmon Ridge Golf Club will host an individual stableford competition that day in Golf House Kentucky Classic #2 supported by PXG. Registration for that tournament is open and will be until 11:59 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, May 25. Additionally, Golf House Kentucky competitions will return to Audubon very soon, as a highly-anticipated 107th Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur takes place here June 15-17. Qualifying for that championship is in full effect and can be tracked by clicking here.
