Daniel Iceman Off to a Hot Start at the 72nd Kentucky PGA Professional Championship
PROSPECT, KY (August 21, 2023) – The three-time winner of the Kentucky PGA's ROLEX Assistant Player of the Year title, Daniel Iceman III, PGA, showcased his talent at the first round of the 72nd Kentucky PGA Professional Championship at Hunting Creek Country Club. His opening round 67 (-5) places him with a two-shot lead.
Iceman played an impressive round today, totaling five birdies and 13 pars. He started strong with a birdie on hole 3 and stayed steady with pars until his next birdie on hole 11. His incredible finish saw birdies on three of the last four holes to bring his total to 5-under. He tees off in the final pairing at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Not far behind is defending champion Jesse Massie, PGA, after carding a 3-under 69. After a back-and-forth start that included two bogeys, a par, and a birdie in four holes, Massie came back to shoot 36 on the front and 33 on the back. Massie joins Iceman in the 11 a.m. final pairing, along with Tom Walters, PGA (70).
There was a total of 8 under-par rounds today amongst the 50-player field.
NOTES & STATS
- Three automatic exemptions and three alternate positions to the 2024 PGA Professional Championship at Fields Ranch in Frisco, Texas, are at stake this week.
- The par-four 9th played the most difficult today, averaging .68 strokes over par with no birdies.
- The par-five 11th was Monday’s easiest hole, averaging a 4.87 with an eagle from Keith Ohr, PGA, and 12 birdies.
- There was a small difference in the difficulty of the front and back nines in the first round. The front nine played slightly harder with an average score of 39.06 compared to the back nine’s 38.69.
- The average score on Monday was 77.75.
