Logan Watts & Daniel Iceman III Each Win to Finish KPGA Match Play Championships

LOUISVILLE, KY (October 19, 2021) – A couple of 2&1 matches at Louisville Country Club polished off the Kentucky PGA Match Play Championships presented by Cunningham | Yamaha. The title matches of the Member and Assistant competitions took place on Tuesday with Logan Watts and Daniel Iceman III prevailing in the respective contests.

Watts took down Andrew Stephens in a back-and-forth match that saw each combatant hold a 1 UP lead multiple times throughout their battle. Watts took the lead after the first hole and held it through the 5th before Stephens drew even and assumed the advantage following the 8th hole. Stephens remained in front after 13 holes, but two of the next three holes went to Watts which tilted things back in the favor of the newly-promoted Head Golf Professional at Louisville Country Club. On the par-five 17th, a missed birdie putt from Stephens left Watts with an eight-footer for birdie to win the title, and a no-doubter straight into the back of the cup gave Watts the victory at his home club. It marks the first time Watts has won a Section Match Play title after multiple close calls in the past with the Assistants competition. Additionally, it keeps the Member trophy in the hands of the Watts family for the second consecutive year, following Blake Watts’ victory at Lexington Country Club in 2020.

After being eliminated from the Member Championship on Monday, Daniel Iceman III still had business to attend to at Louisville Country Club on Tuesday. This time it was in the title match of the Assistants Championship, where for the second straight year he met Nick Johnston in the finals. In their 2020 meeting, Iceman won convincingly with a 5&4 victory. Early on in their rematch, it seemed like the tables might be turned when Johnston was 4 UP after six holes. From there, however, momentum swung in Iceman’s favor as he won the next five holes to take a 1 UP lead when they left the 11th green. Another hole won for Iceman on the 13th put him 2 UP, and the match reached its conclusion on the 17th with the Weissinger Hills Assistant Professional winning 2&1. With it, Iceman successfully defends his Assistant Match Play title and has now won the competition two consecutive years.
