Kentucky's Trey Shirley One of Four Players to Monday Qualify into Barbasol Championship
RICHMOND, KY (July 12, 2021) - Bobby Bai, Scott Gutschewski, David Gazzolo, and Kentucky’s Trey Shirley are through to the Barbasol Championship after advancing through the tournament’s Monday Qualifier at Boone’s Trace National Golf Club.
With rounds of 64 (-8), Bai of Florida and Gutschewski of Nebraska share co-medalist honors after their performances. California’s Gazzolo and the local product Shirley each shot 65 (-7) which made it an even four players who solidified their place in this week’s PGA TOUR event from Keene Trace - Champions Trace.
Unfortunately for ten players, rounds of 66 (-6) on Monday did not prove to be enough as they missed on what would have been a potential playoff by one stroke. That group was made up by Chase Koepka, Daniel Wetterich, Tain Lee, Cory Howard, Justin Suh, Patrick Grimes, Hayden Springer, Alex Weiss, Gunner Wiebe, and Kentucky’s Billy Tom Sargent.
With Bai, Gutschewski, Gazzolo, and Shirley now in the field, the 2021 Barbasol Championship’s list of competitors is solidified barring any withdrawals between now and the tournament’s opening round on Thursday, July 15. The tournament field can be viewed by clicking here.
NOTES & STATS
- Indicative of how strong Monday’s field was, nineteen eagles were made on Monday. All but two were made on a par-five, with the par-four 11th being the only one to sacrifice eagles.
- In spite of the two eagles, the par-four 11th was not the easiest hole of the event. That honor belonged to the par-five 4th which had a stroke-to-par average of -0.79.
- NOTE: The traditional 1st and 2nd holes at Boone’s Trace National played as holes 8 and 9 as the usual 3rd hole was the starting hole on Monday. Therefore, today’s 4th hole would usually be Boone’s Trace National’s 6th hole.
- Even with an elite field on hand, the par-five 10th gave players fits and was not to be taken advantage of as it was the hardest hole of the round at an average of +0.25 which accounted for a dozen bogeys and nine double bogeys or worse.
- The back nine was far tougher than the front nine as holes 10-18 averaged nearly 1 stroke more than the outward half. The front’s average was 34.74 while the back’s was 35.71.
- The scoring average on Monday was 70.45.
