McDowell and Epperson Win Titleist/Footjoy Team Championship
LEXINGTON, KY - The Gay Brewer Jr. Golf Course at Picadome once again played host to the Titleist/Footjoy Team Championship today, a thirty-six-hole competition that has become an annual highlight of the golf season in central Kentucky. This year, the championship was claimed by two Lexington natives in Aaron McDowell, PGA and Matt Epperson as the duo managed to shoot 25-under-par in the multiple format event.
The first eighteen holes of the event were played in a fourball format. Todd and Jeremy Martin got off to a blazing start, getting to six-under-par through their first nine holes thanks to four birdies and an eagle from Jeremy. Todd Martin then contributed with three birdies of his own, and the duo eventually finished at 61(-11). They were joined at eleven-under-par by co-leaders Tom Walters, PGA and Andy Roberts. The first round of play was a "tale of two nines" for McDowell and Epperson. On the front nine, Epperson carried the team, with his ball being taken on eight out of nine holes. On the back nine, though, McDowell put the team on his back and his ball was taken on every hole. The team finished at 64(-8) heading into the scramble portion of the event.
Despite starting the second round three shots off the lead, McDowell and Epperson fired to the top of the leaderboard by playing their first thirteen holes thirteen-under-par. The duo simply outpaced the competition, and a clutch thirty-foot putt by McDowell on the final hole put the final nail in the coffin. McDowell and Epperson finished the second round at 55(-17) for a final score of -25(119) and a one-shot victory over Jeremy and Todd Martin.
Congratulations to Aaron McDowell and Matt Epperson on the victory!
