Member Team Wins Third Straight Kaiser Cup with 12-8 Victory
FLORENCE, IN (April 6, 2021) – The Kentucky PGA’s Member Team has won the Kaiser Cup for a third straight occasion, as a 12-8 victory over the Assistant Team wrapped up the 2021 edition of the event at Belterra Golf Club in Florence, Indiana. Following eight wins in a row from the Assistant Team from 2010-2017, the Member team is now officially in the midst of their own run of success in the tournament.
Beginning the singles session with a 6.5-3.5 lead after Monday’s team matches, the Members sealed the deal relatively early on Tuesday by virtue of Tom Walters, Dan Utley and David Huffman winning the first three matches. Nathan Downs tied the fourth match out, and that half-point assured the Members of retaining the Kaiser Cup. The trophy was officially won shortly thereafter, with Blake Watts and captain Andrew Stephens padding to the final total with victories of their own.
“Just call me Ben Crenshaw,” Stephens said after the matches finished, in reference to the 1999 U.S. Ryder Cup captain. “I’m proud of our guys. They fought hard for two days against a very good Assistants team. We felt like the underdogs coming in and it feels great to come out on top.”
The Kentucky PGA offers its special thanks to Under Armour for their participation in the event and providing each team’s uniforms for the competition. Additionally, the Section extends its appreciation to Ty Robinett, Golf Operations Manager at Belterra along with his staff for their assistance in making the event a success.
