Nick Johnston & Jesse Massie Rally for Win in Pro-Pro Challenge supported by Evolve Golf
LOUISVILLE, KY (May 11, 2021) – Members and Associates of the Kentucky PGA Section got a comprehensive look at Owl Creek Country Club on Monday, as the nine-hole Louisville facility hosted the Pro-Pro Challenge supported by Evolve Golf. A 36-hole event, competitors teamed up in pairs of two where every nine holes featured a different format to play under. A who’s who of top players in the Section separated themselves atop the leaderboard as the event reached the finish line, with Nick Johnston and Jesse Massie prevailing for a one-stroke victory over Andrew Stephens and Colby Wollitz.
The day began with a scramble for each team, where the winning duo of Johnston/Massie shot 28 (-8) to get the early edge. Brothers Blake Watts and Logan Watts overtook the lead shortly thereafter in the day’s second format, alternate shot, where the Watts brothers shot 34 (-2) which was two shots better than the next best score in that format. Four-ball play in the third loop brought Stephens/Wollitz into the fray, along with Matt Bloom and David Huffman. Those teams shot 32 (-4) and 33 (-3), respectively, in four-ball which setup a four-way fight to the finish in the day’s most difficult format, combined score.
With each player in every team now responsible for their own ball, it was the ideal time for Johnston and Massie, two of the Section’s top players to shine. And a round of 67 (-5) made it happen, giving them the best combined score by two strokes. With all scores in and totaled, Johnston/Massie finished the tournament with 169 strokes (-9), Stephens/Wollitz at 170 (-8), Watts/Watts at 172 (-6), and Bloom/Huffman with 173 (-5). With a six-shot gap between fourth and fifth place, it demonstrated how well each of those four teams performed.
For the winning team, this victory signifies Johnston’s second Pro-Pro title of the season having won the Pro-Pro Shamble supported by HMG Accessory Solutions in April with Chris Wilson. For Massie, it is the latest notch to his decorated resume spanning professional and amateur golf. It’s his first Section triumph of 2021 and the odds are good there will be more to follow it later this year.
The Kentucky PGA extends its thanks to Dan Utley, PGA Head Golf Professional at Owl Creek Country Club and his staff for their assistance in making the event a success. Additionally, the Section thanks Nate Clark from Evolve Golf for their partnership in the tournament, along with Impellizzeri’s Pizza for providing lunch to each of the players.
