Louisville, KY – The 98th Kentucky Open teed off today at Hurstbourne Country Club with a full field of 156 Professionals and Amateurs vying to add their name to the Championship trophy. Leading the scoreboard, are Professionals, Patrick Schirmer (age 24) of Owensboro, Kentucky and Nicholas Newcomb (age 30) of Murray, Kentucky, both tied with 3-under-par. Schirmer’s 6 birdies contributed to his success on the course, helping to offset 3 bogeys on holes 2, 9 and 11. Newcomb made 4 birdies, with only 1 bogey on hole 5, helping to keep him in the lead.
In third place is Amateur, Cooper Musselman (age 22) of Louisville. Musselman ended the day 2-under-par, enjoying 4 birdies throughout his game.
Hurstbourne’s par 71 and 7,007 yard course will prove to be a demanding venue for this year’s championship, challenging the best of golfers. Rounding out the top 8 after today, all standing at 1-under-par, include, Professionals, Andrew Stephens (age 32) of Union, Ky and Trey Shirley (age 27) of Bowling Green, Ky and Amateurs, Drew Doyle (age 15) of Louisville, KY, Austin Squires (age 20) of Union, KY, and Tyler McDaniel (age 21) of Manchester, KY.
Doyle is the youngest golfer who qualified for this year’s Kentucky Open, and is demanding attention for his impressive day one round.
