Junior Golf
All-Star Play on an All-Star Day
79 teams began the 2016 PGA Junior League Golf season in Kentucky. They were narrowed down to 17 All-Star teams across the Commonwealth by the end of their respective matches played over the summer. At Quail Chase Golf Club in Louisville on Sunday, August 21 those 17 All-Star teams were whittled down to a Final Four for a fantastic Kentucky Championship. The weather was perfect for competitive and fun golf with low heat and humidity and plenty of sunshine! In PGA Junior League Golf, team members play a two-person scramble in match play format. Over the course of nine holes (using two starters and alternates) teams can pick up as many as three "flags" in three hole sets in match play format against their opposing teams. The Semifinal matches began the day featuring the Greater Shelbyville All-Stars, led by Captain Bryan Slone, PGA Professional at Weissinger Hills Golf Course and Triple Crown Country Club All-Stars led by Captain Tommy Spampinato, PGA Assistant Professional at Triple Crown. The Shelbyville team was able to outlast the group from Northern Kentucky to advance to the Final match. The other Semifinal Match was between East Louisville, led by PGA Assistant Professional Will Schneider of Big Spring Country Club Inc.'s Harmony Landing Campus and the Western Kentucky Bombers, led by Todd Butts, PGA Professional at Drake Creek Golf Course. These two teams engaged in a battle royale that came down to the last match. The East Louisville Team came out strong and were able to advance to the Final Match against Greater Shelbyville. In the Final Consolation Match, the Western Kentucky Team (last year's Champs) defeated the Triple Crown All-Star Squad nine Flags to three Flags. The Final Match saw the East Louisville All-Stars defeating Greater Shelbyville also by a score of nine Flags to three Flags. Congratulations to Sean Mullarkey of Seneca Golf Course, Drew Wallace of Oldham Country Country Club, Evan Beery of Oldham County Country Club, Jack Myers of Owl Creek Country Club, Griffin Blake of Persimmon Ridge Golf Club #2 Team, Macie Brown of Persimmon Ridge Golf Club #2 Team, Will Barbee of Harmony Landing, Lyman Brackett of Harmony Landing, Carl Williams of Harmony Landing and Kash Albarado of Lake Forest Country Club!!!! This talented group of youngsters will now be known as the Kentucky All-Star Team and take their strong play to Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio on September 24-25 to participate in the Regional Championship against teams from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Best of luck to them - we know we will be well represented by some fantastic young ladies and gentlemen! A special thank you to Quail Chase Golf Club and PGA Professional Dave Kaesheimer for their fantastic hospitality for our Kentucky Championship again this year. We would also like to thank everyone who participated in PGA Junior League this season as a player, captain, volunteer and fan! This is a great program and we are so thrilled to celebrate our junior golfers!
