Cathryn Brown Has a Fantastic Round 1 to Set the Pace for the Kentucky Women's Senior Amateur
LEXINGTON, KY – Today marked day one of the 96th Clark's Pump-N-Shop Women's State Amateur. The tournament, held at the University Club of Kentucky on the Big Blue Course, hosts a field of 37 in the championship division and 17 in the senior division.
On day one, the Championship Division played 18 holes of stroke play as a qualifier to determine the match play participants. The top 16 players advanced to the championship bracket, and the next 16 players were placed into the championship consolation bracket.
Cathryn Brown dominated the championship division stroke play qualifier, turning in a spectacular, bogey-free, round of 67 for the day. Brown wowed spectators after turning in a low score of 31 after the first nine holes, securing three birdies and an eagle to put her strokes ahead of the competition. She held the lead after shooting even par on the back nine to secure the number one seed for match play in the Championship Bracket. Brown will face off against defending champion, Alaina Schmitt at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.
For the Senior Championship Bracket, 4 matches were contested as well as 5 matches played in the Senior 1st Flight Bracket. Players that won their matches today moved onto the next round in their respective brackets. And those that lost were re-seeded and moved into consolation for their respective brackets.
For the senior division, number-one seed Cynthia Powell proved her place by dominating her matches. She will tee off tomorrow at 10:30 in a match against Teresa Vance.
Toni Davenport, the number one seed in the Senior Division 1st Flight went on to win her lone match of the day. She will tee it up tomorrow at 11:02 AM against Carmie Sucher.
At the conclusion of day one, the stage is set for even more thrilling matchups in the upcoming rounds. With each division's field narrowing down, anticipation grows for what is to come at the University Club of Kentucky tomorrow.
