Day Two Recap of the KGA Match Play

LOUISVILLE, KY (July 15, 2020) – As the saying goes, “Anything can happen in match play.” The opening wave of Wednesday’s play at Nevel Meade Golf Club for the Kentucky Match Play Championships was met with two upsets in the Open Division as (30) Kevin Waldie defeated (3) C.M. Mixon in 19 holes while (28) Robbie Keyes edged (5) Campbell Kremer 1 UP. From the Round of 32 matches, those wins from Waldie and Keyes each contributed to the seven total matches in which a lower-seeded player knocked off a higher-seeded player. Two additional playoffs were required in this round along with the Waldie/Mixon match as (17) Abraham Mulvihill outlasted (16) Eric King in 22 holes while (19) Aaron Yarmuth won against (14) Jensen Klondike in 19 holes.

Those who advanced from the morning session went back at in the afternoon for the Round of 16. No playoffs were necessary to advance the next stage, but a wide-ranging group of seeds remain setting up a compelling finish to the tournament. Tomorrow morning’s matches are as follows:

(1) Joshua Rhodes vs. (8) Chase Landrum
(20) Rob Crockett vs. (21) Matt Reynolds
(2) C.J Jones vs. (10) Jay Kirchdorfer
(19) Aaron Yarmuth vs. (6) Trevor Johnson

Two playoffs were required in the Senior Division’s Round of 16 before the quarterfinals could be finalized. Both of these also fell in the upset category as (15) Nadmid Tsevegsuren beat (2) Jim Murphy along with (10) Steve Noland taking down (7) Scott Pottinger. Tsevegsuren and Murphy each won their match on the first extra hole with a par. Like the Open Division, no playoffs were needed in the afternoon. The quarterfinal matches produced these semifinal matches:

(1) Buddy Bryant vs. (13) Thomas Campbell
(10) Steve Noland vs. (3) Scott Ray

The championship match in the Senior Net Division is now set. (8) Jerry Dowdy will battle (3) David Biddle tomorrow morning in pursuit of the first trophy up for grabs this week. In their semifinal matches this morning, Dowdy defeated (5) Jeffrey Ramsey 2&1 and Biddle overtook (2) Kenny Bates 3&2.

NOTES AND STATS

  • The KGA season saw its first hole-in-one of the year during the morning as (15) Jacob Cook holed out on the par-three 5th  with a pitching wedge. Cook went on to win that match against (18) Davis Boland 5&4, but was defeated in the Round of 16 by (2) C.J Jones 2&1.
