Humphrey Wins Senior Am in Playoff
The rough was still healthy, the fairways were still narrow and the weather was still hot and humid during the final round of the Kentucky Senior Amateur at Audubon Country Club on Tuesday, August 30. That didn't stop the top senior amateurs in the Commonwealth from teeing it up and posting some terrific final round scores! 115 players battled for titles in the various divisions: The Championship Division (open to all ages 55 and over), Mid-Senior Division (for those ages 40-54), Senior Division (ages 55-64), Masters Division (ages 65-71) and Legends Division (ages 72 and over).
The Mid-Senior Division posted their rounds first and got the day started with a bang! Steve Stallings, Sr. of Louisville fired a phenomenal final round 67 to finish at one-under-par and take home a three-shot victory. Just behind Stallings was Don Kohler, Jr. of Prospect with a two-day 74-72. Rounding out Third Gross was Tom Campbell of Sewanee at five-over-par for the Championship. On the Net Side of scoring, Tony Wise of Georgetown took home Low Net Honors with rounds of 70-71. He finished three shots ahead of Michael Crabtree of Nicholasville. David Brown of Louisville finished Third Low Net after a solid final round and a five-0ver-par total.
The Masters Division were next to finish with more come from behind victories. Allan Fugate of Louisville posted a second round 73 on his home course to finish at 150 total and take home the one-shot victory over Mike Lenox of Cynthiana. Improving his first round score by five shots, Bill Kinzeler of Hebron finished Third Low Gross at 155 total and two shots clear of Joe Pavoni of Prospect. Rounding out the top gross scores was Doug Aaron of Russell Springs with a 157 two-day total. On the Net Side, James Turner posted an impressive three-under-par total score for Top Honors. He finished a shot ahead of Ricky Bourne of Owenton and two clear of Mark Zehnder, playing on his home course. Rounding out the Low Net Finishers were Steve Zeh of Louisville in Fourth with a 144 and Bruce Walters of Lexington with a 145 two-day total.
The Legends Division finished the morning wave of play with more fantastic golf. Don Wood of Louisville took home the Championship title in the Division with a one-under-par two-round total. Finishing in Second Gross was Fred McMillen of Bardstown with rounds of 76-74. William Damron of Harold boasted Low Net Honors with a 137 total and a three shot victory over Dan Trent of La Grange. The Senior Division kicked off an exciting afternoon. Chris Duncan of Crestwood took home the Low Gross Prize with two solid rounds of 78. He boasted a three-shot victory over Don Niehaus of Crestview Hills. James Simpson of Eminence was Third Low Gross with a two-round total of 161 and a shot ahead of Greg Grider of Russell Springs. On the Net Side, Randy Stambaugh of Louisville took home the victory with a one-under-par total and a one-shot victory over Greg Turner of Alexandria. Rounding out the top finishers were Tim Medley of Union (144) and Mike Gosnell of Louisville (149).
The Championship Division finished off the day in dramatic fashion. Lexington's Steve Humphrey has been close to this title for many years, and after a par on the 10th hole (the first playoff hole) he finally took one home. Humphrey, the 2016 Senior Match Play Champ, proved (once again) he has game on the stroke play side as well after posting a final round of 68. He and Scott Ray of Central City found themselves tied after 36-holes of competition. Ray finished his day with an even-par 72 and the Runner-Up title. Somerset's Happy Rakestraw finished Third with an even-par total, one shot ahead of Louisville's David Pohlmann and two shots ahead of Louisville's Scott Pottinger, who posted a final round 69. Tom Scheuerman of Peewee Valley (148), Gary Backlund of Mt. Sterling (148) and Joe Bunch of Danville (149) rounded out Sixth-Eighth Places, respectively.
Congratulations to all of our Champions! We had a fantastic event and cannot thank Audubon Country Club enough for being terrific hosts!
