Team KGA Takes A Fifth Straight Coomer Cup Title

Team KGA dominates to win Coomer Cup for the fifth straight year.

BOWLING GREEN, KY (September 6, 2023) – After severe weather delayed the start of the annual Coomer Cup, a Ryder Cup-style match-play event between the Kentucky Golf Association and Kentucky PGA Professionals, team KGA (16) proved victorious with an eight-point win over team KPGA (8).

The event, hosted by The Club at Olde Stone this year, sees the top 12 KGA golfers square off against the top 12 KPGA professionals in team and singles matches. Named for the legendary Bill Coomer, PGA, the event celebrates the over 25-year career of Coomer, as well as the game of golf in the Commonwealth. Each team is led by the president of their organization who serves as the captain - Dean Terry on the KGA side and Danny Baron, PGA on the KPGA side.

The morning opened with a 9-hole four-ball match, claimed by the KGA with 3.5 points, as opposed to the KPGA's 2.5. After the first three matches of the day finished at a tie, the duo of Brad Maynard, PGA and Daniel Iceman, PGA, put the first full point on the board in favor of the KPGA with a 2&1 victory over Drake Stepter and Jay Nimmo. However, the KGA claimed the final two matches after Eric Fuldner and Brett Metzger beat Mitchell Moore, PGA and John Mullendore, PGA 1 up, with the same score mirrored by Ballard Harris and Robbie Keyes over Andrew Lardner, PGA and David Huffman, PGA.
With the teams and pairings remaining the same, players then moved to 9-hole foursome matches, again taken by the KGA in dominant fashion, allowing the KPGA to win only 12 holes throughout all six matches. Tying just two matches and not losing any, team KGA took a five-point lead heading into singles matches.
The late afternoon then saw repairing for the singles matches. Though team KPGA saw some comeback, winning three matches, team KGA expanded their margin of victory to eight after winning seven out of 12 matches.
