The Top 10 Photos of the 2020 Season

2020 has been a challenge, but thankfully, there was golf. The tournament seasons for the Golf House Kentucky organizations were full of great moments and many of them were captured on camera; each encapsulating something that represents the game's greatness. The process of selecting the 10 best photos of the year went as follows: staff members at Golf House Kentucky were given a candidate pool of about 70 photos from staff photographer Ethan Fisher. Each employee gave their own personal Top 10, of which a weighted average was completed once all were submitted. The "story" and thoughts behind each photo from Ethan are provided.

This was during the final round of the Kentucky Women's Open at Heritage Hill Golf Club with Illinois State's Rebecca Black hitting from the greenside bunker on the 5th hole. Her form is impeccable, but as it turned out the splash of the clubhead against the sand produced a great snapshot of the ball rising out of the bunker.

Pictured is Blake Watts during the championship match of the KPGA Match Play at Lexington Country Club. As you can probably tell, this ball goes in. It was actually a chip-in for par which halved the hole and kept him 1 UP over Andrew Stephens. The ball tumbling over into the hole was a huge momentum moment, and Watts would go on to take the title 2 holes later.

During the final minutes of this year's Youth on Course Pro-Am presented by ISCO, I made a couple laps around Valhalla's 18th green as the sun faded. There was a surplus of great possibilities to photograph during that timeframe. This one stands out because of the light coming off the clubhouse and the tournament leaderboard. The whole reason why this photo happened is because of a rain delay in the afternoon that put a lot of doubt into whether or not every player would be able to complete 18 holes. The delay turned out to be a blessing in disguise as this photo got captured as the final group walked off the green. I made a lot of parallels to the 2014 PGA Championship here when Rory McIlroy finished, and it reminds me of just how good this photo from David Cannon is.

A light-hearted moment during the KGA Women's Team Championship in Elizabethtown. This happened right after her tee shot on the par-three 6th found the green. I think it's a great message that golf is all about fun and you should never take yourself too seriously.

Indian Hills Country Club has some of the best bunkers in the state. This moment from the KGA Am Series event there in July speaks to the quality of the sand there more than anything. Host of last year's Kentucky PGA Professional Championship and the 2022 Clark's Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur, players love this course for tournament golf.

Maybe my personal favorite, this was taken at the beginning of Day 2 in the KGA Match Play Championships. Nevel Meade Golf Club was the host of the event and Nevel Meade is also the site, in my opinion, of Kentucky golf's best sunrises and sunsets. The wide-open landscape there creates so many moments like this during dawn and dusk. What makes this photo so memorable for me is the sole player warming up in advance of his match. It reminds me why I love being around tournament golf and the grind that goes into the process.

Before the KGA Am Series event at The Standard Club, Mike Riley, PGA Head Professional warned our staff and some players to keep their eyes open for a coyote or two. Sure enough, not long after the event started, this beauty was taking a nap on the 9th fairway. I woke her up as I approached her to get this photo, but she was unphased and let me get to about 20 yards away from her. The beauty of her eyes is stunning.

A long birdie putt holed on Greenbrier's 10th during the KPGA Pro-Lady led to this moment for Blake Watts' team. The form on this fist pump is perfect and the fact she's wearing Tiger-red adds to the awe of the moment. The amplitude of her "WOOO!" was extremely impressive too.

One of my favorite days of the season was the Legends of Shawnee Tournament that the KGA got to lend a hand in running. Each of the guys who teed it up that day was awesome to interact with and provided some great photo-ops. This stood out though. I don't think there's a better photo from 2020 that better showcases how fun golf can be, the enjoyment you can have with a friend, and the smiles the sport can produce. As a bonus: they're socially distanced! Proof that golf is the most covid-safe sport there is.

The top photo of the 2020 campaign and it's easy to see why. It's an incredible moment to have captured for a few reasons. First, his flexibility. Second, his facial expression. Third, just how much of a 50-50 putt this was at that given instant. It did go in, which certainly helps make the moment more memorable. This all occured on the par-five 17th at Lake Forest Country Club during the Feeders Supply Pro-Am. Put it in The Louvre.
