Louisville, KY – Persimmon Ridge Golf Club was the host of the Drive, Chip & Putt Sub-Regional that featured 120 kids from Kentucky and the surrounding states on Sunday, August 13th. The Sub-Regional is the 2nd stage of Qualifying for these youngsters that are vying for a spot in the National Championship to be held on August 1, 2018 at Augusta National Golf Club.
Each one of these participants survived their Local Qualifying Stage to earn the right to compete in the Sub-Regional. The competition features eight different divisions based on age and gender. Boys & girls ages 7-15 are eligible to compete in the skills competition where the cumulative score for 3 drives, 3 chips and 3 putts determines the players that will advance. Two players from each division advance from the Sub-Regional to the Regional competition to be held at the Honors Course in Tennessee on September 24th. The winners of the Regional event will then continue to the National Championship. The PGA of America, the USGA and Augusta National Golf Club joined forces to provide this incredible opportunity to kids all across the United States.
Sunday’s competition was kicked off with the Girls 7-9 Division. Alexa Salamah of Owensboro, KY was the Champion with a total score of 97. The Runner-Up was Abigail Caine (Versailles, KY) with a score of 92 . Both players will move on to the next stage of the competition.
The Boys 7-9 Division featured a close race as Griffin Jackson of Glasgow, KY pulled out the victory over Thaxton Cheyne (Canton, GA). Their scores of 122 and 118 separated them from the pack.
Gianna Clemente (Warren, OH) and Trinity Beth (Calvert City, KY) earned qualifying spots in the Girls 10-11 Division with scores of 128 and 98 respectively.
The Boys 10-11 Division was full of top contenders but the duo of Lawson Wade (Louisvile, KY) and Hudson Capps (Knoxville, TN) claimed the two top spots with scores of 115 and 109.
The Girls 12-13 Division proved to be exciting as Claire Yeazell of West Chester, OH edged out Isabell Seeley of Williamsport, OH with scores of 109 and 96 respectively.
The Boys 12-13 Division posted some high scores. At the top of the leaderboard were Hayden Adams (Lexington, KY) and Logan Liles (Vanceburg, KY) with scores of 134 and 132. This was a tough division with many close scores.
Kynadie Adams of Gallatin, TN won the Girls 14-15 Division with an incredible score of 152. She held off Faith Martin of Rockfield, KY with a score of 121 for the victory.
The Boys 14-15 Division winner was Drew Wallace (Crestwood, KY) with a total of 163. The Runner-Up was Jay Nimmo of Benton, KY with a score of 149. Drew posted the highest score of the day!
