Kentucky PGA Professionals are still serving their customers in this incredible extended summer we are having, but they also had a chance this year to get out and play some incredible rounds of golf themselves! The Kentucky PGA is pleased to announce the very best in each category for the 2016 season with the OMEGA Players of the Year, courtesy of the Bushnell Player Standings.
The OMEGA Larry Gilbert Player of the Year is Blake Watts, Head PGA Professional at Wildwood Country Club. Watts is no stranger to great play, he held this same title in 2011 and 2014. He also was named Assistant Professional Player of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014. His highlights in the 2016 season were numerous! He was the Kentucky PGA Champion at Valhalla Golf Club, which allows him to represent the KPGA in the PGA Professional Championship next year. He was the low KPGA Member in the 2016 Kentucky Open. He was a Semi-finalist in the KPGA Match Play Championship. He Low Professional in numerous Pro-Am events, including the KPGA Pro-Lady, Bill Long Mega Pro-Am and the National Car Rental Pro-Am Series at Andover Golf & Country Club. He did all of this to amass 7705 points and a commanding win in the Bushnell Player of the Year Standings. Perhaps most impressive he played this well while balancing the new responsibilities of being a Head Professional (this is his first year as a Head Professional, making the transition from an Assistant PGA Professional).
The OMEGA Assistant Player of the Year is Daniel Iceman, III, Assistant Professional at Weissinger Hills Golf Course. Iceman had one heck of Professional tournament season himself, tallying up 7700 points for his first Player of the Year honors, also in dominating fashion. His highlights are also numerous and impressive! Iceman was the 2016 KPGA Assistant Championship Champion and qualified for the PGA Assistant Championship, where he posted a Top 20 finish among the best in the country. He and partner, Alex Martin, were Champions in the TaylorMade-adidas Pro-Pro Indy. He was the low Assistant Professional in the Kentucky Open (finishing as the overall Runner-Up after a playoff). He was also a Semi-finalist in the KPGA Assistant Match Play Championship.
The OMEGA Senior Player of the Year honors came down to a very close race with Crescent Hill Golf Course Head PGA Professional, Barry Bonifield taking home the victory with 6120 points. This is Bonifield’s first Player of the Year honors. He was Runner-Up in the Kentucky PGA Senior Match Play Championship at Greenbrier Golf and Country Club and recorded a top 10 finish in the Kentucky Senior Open. He was second Low Senior Professional at the National Car Rental Pro-Am Series event at Big Spring Country Club and the Amazon.com Pro-Senior at Campbellsville Country Club. He and partner Al Chrouser finished Tied for Third in the Pro-Pro Division of the Callaway Pro-Pro Team Championship at Hunting Creek Country Club. His team also finished third in the Pro-Junior at Andover Golf and Country Club. He also had a Sixth Place finish in the 2016 Kentucky PGA Senior Championship at Winchester Country Club.
Congratulations to Watts Iceman and Bonifield on their excellent play this season! We know they still have plenty left to wow us again in 2017! They will be honored at the Kentucky PGA Fall Member Conference and the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame Ceremony.
