The Kentucky Drive, Chip & Putt history books were altered today as we recorded the largest ever qualifier in our state. A grand total of 233 kids participated in the Local Qualifier held at Seneca Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky! The game of golf appeared to be alive and well as kids flocked to Seneca to compete in this fun skills challenge.
The Local Qualifying stage is the first step on the Road to Augusta. The Top 3 Qualifiers from each division will continue onto the Sub-Regional Qualifier to be held at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club in Louisville, KY on August 13th. The Regional Qualifier will be at the Honors Course in Tennessee on September 24th. The juniors who make it through all 3 stages of Qualifying will then compete at the National Drive, Chip & Putt Championship to be held at Augusta National Golf Club on April 1, 2018.
It was a beautiful sunny day for the event. The Girls 7-9 Division set their alarms early as they kicked off the day at 7:30 a.m. Alexa Salamah from Owensboro, KY sealed the victory for this division with a total score of 82. The 2nd and 3rd qualifying spots were claimed by Heidi Mitchell (Louisville, KY ) and Abigayle Graf (Memphis, IN ) with scores of 58 and 54 .
The Boys 7-9 Division was won by Brady Youssefi from Louisville, KY with a score of 99. He narrowly defeated Lucas Kelty (Fisherville, KY) and Colin Shankle (Louisville, KY) with their scores of 97 and 88 .
Sadie Ziemer ( Evansville, IN) edged out Ella Pankonin (Louisville, KY) and Olivia Schrecker (Louisville, KY) to win the Girls 10-11 Division. The girls scores were 100, 73 and 65 respectively. They will all continue on to the next stage of the competition at Persimmon Ridge on August 13th.
The Boys 10-11 Division was full of top golfers from around the state. It was an intense competition with Landon Stillwell from Louisville, KY pulling out the victory with a total score of 114. Scores of 105 and 97 were strong enough for Lawson Wade (Louisville, KY) and Jacob Holzer (Louisville, KY) to secure the final two qualifying spots in this Division.
The Girls 12-13 Division was packed. Jenna Estravillo of Mt. Washington, KY was the winner with a score of 114. She was able to hold off both Sophie Cook (Lanesville, IN) and Abigail Sutherland (Glenview, KY) with their scores of 110 and 109 to be the champion of this division.
Michael Long (Shelbyville, KY) posted the top score of 156 to capture the Boys 12-13 Division. It was a close victory with both Shelton Smith (Westview, KY) and Landon Mallory (Prospect, KY) right on his heels with scores of 126 and 120.
The Girls 14-15 Division was full of the best area girl golfers as they competed for their division title. Savannah Howell of Calvert City, KY won the first place prize with a total score of 157. Chloe Estravillo (Mt. Washington, KY) and Destynie Sheridan (Ft. Branch, IN) grabbed the other two qualifying spots with scores of 129 and 121 respectively.
Ending the day with an exciting finish was the Boys 14-15 Division. James Howard ‘s (Shepherdsville, KY) high score of 163 proved to be impossible to beat as he claimed his division. Both Evan Beery (LaGrange, KY) and Drew Wallace (Crestwood, KY) will be joining him at the Persimmon Ridge Sub Regional as they claimed the 2nd and 3rd place positions with scores of 147 and 144.
