It was a classic matchup of two fantastic gentlemen in the Finals of the Kentucky PGA Senior Match Play Championship at Greenbrier Golf and Country Club on Friday, July 1. Crescent Hill PGA Professional, Barry Bonifield and Juniper Hill PGA Professional, Kirk Schooley faced one another in what promised to be a final match with plenty of great ball striking. Both players delivered on that promise with a steady stream of great shots all morning long. Schooley took the early 1-up lead through three holes after draining a three-foot birdie putt. Bonifield came back on the fourth with a terrific sand save to bring the match back to all-square. Schooley then drained a six-foot birdie on on six and another on nine for the 2-up advantage halfway through the round. On the back nine, the skies darkened and the breeze picked up as the threat of rain descended upon an otherwise beautiful morning with low heat and humidity.
On the back nine, the skies darkened and the breeze picked up as the threat of rain descended upon an otherwise beautiful morning with low heat and humidity. The conditions didn’t seem to affect either player. Bonifield brought himself back to one-down with a par on the 12th. His putter seemed to let him down a few times during the round, narrowly missing several birdie opportunities. Schooley and Bonifield traded winning holes on 14 and 15. Schooley converted another short birdie on 16 to bring the match to dormie. Both players made par on the 17th hole, closing out the match with Schooley posting the 2&1 victory.
Congratulations to Schooley on this hard fought match! He and Terry Simon battled through 19 holes in the Semifinal match and he defeated Bobby Cooke in the Quarterfinal matches 3&2. Bonifield defeated Greg Bashman and Carmello Benassi in his road to the finals.
A special thank you to the PGA Staff at Greenbrier Golf and Country Club for their hospitality and use of their pristine golf course! Another thank you goes out to Pukka Hats and Sales Representative Billy Trimble for their support of the event.
