It was a tumultuous final round to the Kentucky Senior Open on July 6 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club. The nearly 80 players in the field battled a challenging golf course, hot and humid conditions and an almost two-hour rain delay to complete competition. Both divisions (Ages 60 and Over and Open Championship) were close in score to add to the drama of the day and made for a great day, despite the hurdles presented to the players. It was also a special day for Robert Stobart of Burlington, who recorded a hole-in-one on the twelfth hole.
The 60 and Over Division finished first. Michael Smith of Louisville posted a final round 73 to follow up his opening round of 79 to take home the two-shot victory. Jim Orr took the knowledge of his home course to finish second in a scorecard playoff with a two-day total of 75-79. Mel McIntyre, Head PGA Professional at Kentucky Dam Village State Park finished third with matching rounds of 75-79.
The Championship was a fight to the finish with four players chasing the lead. Pat Stephens, PGA Head Men’s Golf Coach at Eastern Kentucky University, emerged as the Champion with a two-putt from six feet for par on 18 to finish at even-par for the tournament. He was followed by Steve Humphrey of Lexington, Ted Schulz of Louisville and Gary Backlund of Mt. Sterling – who all finished at one-over-par for the Championship after two rounds. Humphrey took home Low Amateur honors followed by Backlund. Schulz took home the prize for second among Professionals followed by Randy Jewell of Richmond.
Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who participated! We would also like to thank Persimmon Ridge Golf Club for their hospitality!

The nearly 80 players in the field teed it up on the always difficult Persimmon Ridge amid damp and humid conditions. The field was split into two divisions: Open and those for ages 60 and over. 2013 Champ Steve Humphrey of Lexington, 2014 Champ Craig RauvolaBouta 2015 Champ David Pohlmann of Louisville and many more standout seniors are in the field and we are excited for a terrific championship!
In the 60 and Over Division, Head PGA Professional at Kentucky Dam Village State Park Mel McIntrye and Persimmon Ridge member, Jim Orr of Louisville are tied atop the leaderboard at three-over-par 75. An additional three senior amateur standouts: Joe Cantrell of Louisville sits one shot back and Johnny Belcher of Glasgow and another Persimmon Ridge member, Jerry Edwards, sit two shots back. It’s a closely contested battle we look forward to seeing unfold!
In the Overall Championship, course knowledge once again proved to be very beneficial. Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame Member, Ted Schulz of Louisville (who lives in the Persimmon Ridge sub-division) and PGA Head Coach at Eastern Kentucky University, Pat Stephens share the first round lead with excellent scores of three-under-par 69. Amateur Gary Backlund of Mt. Sterling found himself near the top of the leaderboard (as he so often does) after a one-under-par round of 71. Humphrey, John Lepping of Louisville and PGA Professional Matt O’Keefe are also in striking distance with rounds of one-over-par 73. Defending Champ, David Pohlmann of Louisville is lurking just a few additional shots back after an opening round of 76.
